HealthSouth to buy Desert Canyon Rehabilitation Hospital

Medical giant HealthSouth Corp. today announced plans to expand in Las Vegas with an agreement to buy the 50-bed Desert Canyon Rehabilitation Hospital.

HealthSouth, based in Birmingham, Ala., didn't disclose terms for the hospital at 9175 W. Oquendo Road near the 215 beltway and Russell Road in southwest Las Vegas.

"The acquisition of Desert Canyon Rehabilitation Hospital is an important acquisition for HealthSouth," HealthSouth President and CEO Jay Grinney said in a statement. "It complements our existing presence in Las Vegas and signals a renewed emphasis on disciplined growth through acquisitions that will bring additional value to our shareholders."

"In a relatively short period of time Desert Canyon Rehabilitation Hospital has earned an outstanding reputation in southwest Las Vegas. We look forward to building on this reputation and welcome the hospital and staff into our network," said Jerry Gray, president of the West Region for HealthSouth.

This will be HealthSouth's third rehabilitation hospital in Las Vegas, joining HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Henderson and HealthSouth

Rehabilitation Hospital of Las Vegas. HealthSouth also operates a long-term acute care hospital, HealthSouth Hospital of Tenaya, and a home health agency in Henderson.

When it opened in July 2007 with the backing of local investors, Desert Canyon was described as a facility offering treatment in a retreat-like atmosphere.

Desert Canyon says it provides both inpatient and outpatient physical therapy services for people who have suffered stroke, spinal cord injury, amputation, orthopedic injury, join replacement, trauma, brain injury, neurological disorders, work-related injury, outpatient services, and ventilator care.
