The numbers: What Hispanics are earning in Nevada
Thursday, April 8, 2010 | 2 a.m.
2008 estimates indicate Nevada has the fifth-highest percentage of Hispanics in the U.S. — 26 percent, or 669,000. Hispanic households are earning more money in Nevada than in most states, with a smaller gap between the earnings of those households and the state median income than in California, Arizona and Utah.

That's pretty good money!
wow...i have been unemployed for two years, and the illegals are making more money then me. So much for the white people.
But, will you get off your butt and do that kind of work for that kind of money?
acesbet -
Are you insane? I am pretty sure if Braedo has been unemployed for 2 years, he would be more than willing to do a $46k job!
5th highest amount of hispanics in the nation? Is that legal or illegal? 669,000? I wonder how many of those people are paying taxes for their kids to attend school. According to this article in the paper
http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2009/sep...
it is over 100 million in bills that go unpaid in medical care. Like I said I'm not sure if these people are here legally or illegally, but I would geuss that a large portion the money made is not kept in the country and sent back to Mexico - again detracting from the growth of our country. I have nothing agaginst hispanics or any other color, creed, or religion - I only feel that there should be equality. I feel that since I am a regular lawful hardworking man who follows the rules that other people should do so as well. When they don't they should be held accountable. Our border patrol spends billions of dollars but does very little internally to deport these people. It is like a DUI check point at the county line....if your drunk at the check point you go to jail. If your found on the other side deep in the county its OK. Local cops "are not" allowed to enforce any immagration law as it is a "political nightmare"!! That was a quote from the police when I asked if they deport or arrest illegals!!! Crazy world we live in!
All folks of white descent that live in trailer parks and have less than a 12 grade education are now being deported.
The bottom line is this: you need to be held accountable for stealing the land from Native Americans. And frankly, your illiteracy, violence, under employment, and sexual addiction all make the rest of us here in Vegas look really, really, bad.
Also, anyone who is dumb enough to listen to these xenophobic morons it also required to leave. Especially, if they think they are "owed something" by society.
@ OG Don't stoop to these people's level. They are bitter, and based on their posts here and elsewhere, don't have more than a grade school education.
I pay more in taxes than these bums make in a year. Why? Because I work hard, like so many Hispanics that come here to live the American dream. My parents worked menial jobs, worked hard, got paid next to nothing and still managed to get all of us through college.
This is not a race thing. My friends are white, Asian, black and Hispanic. They're all successful. This is a class thing. It's always easy for the lower class of all races to blame someone for their problems. In this country, it's many poor and uneducated whites who blame immigrants.
It's easy to understand because since they don't possess the high-level skills to compete with other laborers, they're more susceptible to losing jobs to someone willing to do it for less and without complaining.
OG, don't fall for the trap that it's about whites versus Hispanics because it's not. We have to battle idiocy, not race.
Hispanic does not mean illegal. If you think it does, it's no wonder you don't make much at your job, if you even have one.
My good friend Romeo worked cleaning the bathrooms at Casino Monte Lago at Lake Las Vegas. 177 people got laid off when the place closed. So I asked him what he was going to do next.
He simply said "I'll go back home for a while, and then come back, and find another yob." I like his positive attitude. America is lucky to have so many hard workers like Romeo.
To TedBundy - You like the people coming over from Mexico do not have an understanding of the English language. ILLEGAL means ILLEGAL!
I'd be on the street if I only earned 46k. I have no idea how people live on that.
@ Eddie Number one, not everyone coming to America is from Mexico. You live in Nevada and so that happens to be the predominant nationally. Number two, I agree with you that any and all immigrants should arrive to the US legally. That said, be angry at all the businesses that hire illegal immigrants and cheap labor. That said, you'll be the first to complain when the price of everything goes up because Walmart can't afford to buy cheap produce and goods hand-picked by those very same immigrants you hate so much.
Axiom- you hit the nail on the head. This is not a race/ethnic thing, but rather a class thing. And yes, it is ALWAYS the lower echelon of white people that bash immigrants. They bash immigrants because
immigrants pose a threat to their lifestyle, and future. This is nothing new, the Irish and Italians have overcome this type of treatment in the past. And like them, the Hispanic people will rise and overcome these minor obstacles. Hispanic people (generally speaking) are a hard working and family-oriented group of individuals. Like my parents (2nd generation); I will ensure that my children go to college, work
hard and become a productive member of society.
westvegas you remind me of Latrell Sprewell. He was once offered a $17 mil contract to play ball and he rejected it saying "How can I live off that, I have a family to feed". He was never offered another contract again by any other team. With that being said..I really don't care about illegals or legals getting jobs. I went to college and obtained an education. I have a skill in which I am certified. If a job decided to hire someone less qualified for less money, that's fine. I would just find another job. I have enough money saved up that I could be jobless for 5 years and still live. I worked hard..learned how not to let the casinos take away what I have earned..did not fall for the oaky-doak trying to buy at $250,000 house just becasue it was the thing to do. My home is paid for and I am in the process of capitalizing off other's misfortune (housing market) to make additional income. I will keep working and continue using MY brain. I could care less about illegals, legals, or race. I would gladely exchange money from your hands to place in my pocket. So for all those complaining about who makes what..get up, get out and control your own destiny..
The article doesn't say if they are legal or not? What's up with the incomplete information?
It's a pretty safe bet that if all the illegals were deported then our unemployment problem would go away overnight. We might not be at 0%, but it would be damn close.
And that would be a great start to recovery in this state.
Axiom - Wrong regarding Walmart. I will not step a foot into Walmart regardless of the 'lower' prices. At what cost is the huge percentage of items they purchase from China hurting our ecomony? It takes a little more work, but I buy American when I can and try to support the businesses in our country. So I would be among the last to complain about their prices regardless of what they are.
We can all blame each other for not working but we should be looking at the mirror and blame ourselves. There are lots of high paying jobs being filled in by foreigners because we are not capable or prepared to do them. If we are almost illiterate and not have skills or college education, how can we expect to do the skilled high paying jobs? A lot of these choice jobs are being filled in by the Asians, Indians (from India) and other nationals that value education to get ahead. They come here with almost nothing and three years later, they are living in mansions and driving luxury cars. We should be envious of these guys and not the illegals making 40k, but this is only possible by encouraging our kids to have skills and prepare a high paying jobs.
@ Unclegig You're absolutely right! One major example of this is Silicon Valley. Just about all biggest tech companies are led by Chinese and Indian developers.
@ Truth Right on. Every new group has had to struggle with acceptance. And every new group has it's percentage of low-lives that unfortunately serve as fodder for xenophobes.
What jobs, exactly, are the unemployed complainers above losing to undocumented immigrants? I'm sorry, but if you are competing for the same job as that the guy standing in front of Home Depot and HE gets it then you might want to take a look at your skill sets, or maybe your resume.
The fact is that in order for anyone in this country to have a middle class or above existence we MUST have people willing to do some of the lower paid jobs. Everyone can't be a lawyer or firefighter, we have to have minimum wage employees, so immigrants come, they work hard and later generations move up the social ladder. As demonstrated by the article above that is already happening with Hispanics in this country. It's the American way.
As TruthBtold pointed out, the immigration phenomenon is not new. These are all "problems" the country faced before with the Italians, Irish, Poles, Chinese etc. The bigots and xenophobes said the same thing in the 19th century: "they're lazy, (and yet somehow) they take all of the jobs, they don't speak English."
See? nothing new. It worked out then and it'll work out now, the only difference is that we might all look a little different, and I think that is what bothers most people, even if they don't admit it.
As for all of you who insist on using the term "illegal" maybe you can explain what makes a person "illegal"?
Is that when you have a warrant for your arrest? When you commit a crime you haven't been caught for? Does that include speeding? Does "illegal" mean not having a piece of paper issued by a bureaucrat? How is that different from fishing with out a license or driving with bad plates?
With regards to Silicon Valley as an example, you can thank businesses who use the H1B visa program to hire foreign nationals at lower wages for that. Bill Gates is a huge supporter of that practice and is constantly asking Congress to raise the limits on H1B visas.
There is no reason whatsoever for a tech company to be unable to fill an entry-level posistion with a US citizen.
@ThisOneGuy -
If you cannot understand the term "illegal", I would suggest a dictionary. I am assume you can read??
My family became legal through amnesty, and I was given the opportunity to go to college. I joined the Military and I defend this great nation with great honor. I don't believe it should be easy to become a US citizen, but I also don't think it should be impossible. We were never on welfare growing up. We were poor and we worked hard jobs that paid low wages. I pay more taxes than the average American, and I know many more Hispanics that do the same. WE LOVE THIS COUNTRY AND WE'RE NOT GOING ANYWHERE. C'mon people, show us some love. Get to know us, we value your democracy and entrepreneurial spirit. Together we can continue being the greatest nation on Earth.
@Boftx With all due respect and as someone in that works in this area, you're wrong. If American companies want to continue to lead in many industries, they must attract talent from throughout the globe. And that is what they do.
There was a recent article in the Harvard Business Review talking about the contributions of immigrants to industry in America. They're contributions are overwhelming which in turn create more jobs for others in this country. And yes, the majority are first and second generation Americans.
I would guess the figures reflect LEGAL otherwise how would someone get the statistic? Also, the chart reflects Hispanic HOUSEHOLDS - not an Hispanic PERSON. There may be one to four bread winners in the household. So that could be $11,500 to $46,000 per person.
ThisOneGuys comments are great - but I think flawed. There IS a difference in Latino immigration vs. previous ethnicities.
First - I don't think there were ever 11 million illegals of any other ethnicity.
Second - population stats show that by 2040, "whites", will be in the minority. Not saying that's a bad thing - statistics bear out one of the major factors in this happening by that year is due to Latino population growth based on current data and future extrapolation. So if you thought your race was going to become a minority, you'd be scared too.
Third - all, or the vast majority, of previous immigration ethnicities produced one or several charismatic leaders who represented their people - I'm still waiting to see some of that from the Latino population in the past 20 years. Representative Luis Guiterrez from Illinois speaking at the immigration reform rally in D.C. a few weeks ago likened Latinos to being a slave race in the U.S with the work that they do for the pay they get. He said there should be union wages to collect onions. He never said Latinos are better than that - that there are Mexican doctors, scientists, philosophers and artists from which the U.S. can benefit as they contribute to the nation's future heritage. Instead, he told his people that they ARE the slave people to do the menial work because that is exactly what they should be doing. He then emphasized this by speaking Spanish. This is not an example of inclusiveness. This was a demonstration to U.S. citizens that Mexicans are not capable of learning English to better themselves and have more than what he says they are capable of becoming.
You also cannot reward 11 million people breaking the law and say, "Congrats -- you're now a U.S. Citizen." You cannot blame the feds for separating families if people came here illegally and took their chances of their families being separated. You cannot use the excuse that one came to the U.S. for a better life -- when you can be trying to fix your own country. A lot of people around the world want to come here for a better life -- and they do it the right way through legal channels.
The Latino culture is rife with the need to show "respect." And yet, there is little respect on the part of illegals to what they want to be their adoptive homeland. And I think THIS is what's got a lot of Americans steamed. The first step to that is learning English -- it makes sense on so many levels and benefits both sides of the issue.
Oh, and the "jobs Americans won't do" argument is ridiculous. So are Latino people saying, "if we don't pick your lettuce for pennies who will?" That's the argument for having 11 million illegals living here? The cost of produce? The country got used to high price gas and now health care. It can easily get used to more expensive lettuce and onions.
No one is making a strong case yet for illegals.
@Roger, telling someone to get out a dictionary shows the weakness of your position. If you are unable to tell me how it is possible that a person can be "illegal" then maybe you ought not use the term yourself.
If you broke the speed limit today how are you NOT illegal this afternoon?
Are you an "illegal" when you fish with out a license?
Maybe "illegal" is just a way to label someone who you don't like or are afraid of? A term designed to dehumanize someone you happen dislike? A not-so-clever code word that pseudo-patriots use to vent their racist feelings?
illegals have the nerve to break the laws and steal feel social services, so that is the strong case of why they should be here. couple that with americans are too lazy or stupid to stop it. mexico surely isn't sending money to cover the cost of the illegal's "free" medical care or education that americans pay for.
Yet another indication the US is saturated. Even a good slave now is close to the price of a domestic one.
Tough all over, even for a Plutocrat. This is why the stylish scumball is placing his fiat currency on what they call the "emerging markets". Many slave opps in the 3rd level down.
@ThisOneGuy -
If you want to use analogies to attempt to make your point, I would suggest better ones! Instead of speeding, how about high speed chase (fleeing from police). Instead of fishing without a license, how about welfare fraud/social services fraud/income tax evasion.
Axiom, I must respectfully disagreee with you. I, too, am in the industry and have seen this practice first hand. People on an H1B visa were prefered over US citizens simply because they would work for less pay. These people were hired to fill junior- and mid-level programmer positions that required only basic skill sets.
So Roger you are saying you are just LESS "illegal" for speeding earlier today than if you had entered the country illegally? Will you be "illegal" tomorrow for speeding yesterday, or does a humans "illegality" fade with time?
It isn't an analogy - it is a question: how are the only humans who are capable of being "illegal" the people who don't have a certain piece of paper in his or her wallet? How are you or I not "illegal" for all of the legal infractions or crimes we have committed? Do you call people with warrants for their arrest "illegal"?
@Chediski
Yes there are differences between current immigration and past immigration the big one you failed to mention is the geographical connection. None of the other immigrant groups lived within our borders to start with, none had such close ethnic ties with citizens already here.
Not only do we share a current border with Mexico but up until the Texas secession in 1836 and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 most of what is now the U.S. west was actually part of Mexico.
So there is a long history of cross border migration, long before we drew arbitrary lines after the Mexican American war.
As far as leaders go, I'd be curious as to what Chinese American immigrant leader you are thinking of. As for Hispanic leaders here you just have to know your history, or read the paper. Remember that Jose Antonio Romualdo Pacheco Jr was governor of California in the 1800's. We've had numerous Hispanic/Latino members of congress and governors since then and Sonia Maria Sotomayor now sits on the Supreme Court of the United States. Definitely a Hispanic/Latino leadership class here in the U.S.
I am very much against illegal immigration, however I know we won't deport them all. Here is what I propose.
If you have been here at least 5 years,
have never relied on welfare or social services, have been productive and self-supporting,
if you have not broken any laws while here,
and if you will submit to having your DNA checked against the unsolved crimes database
and forego any public assistance other than the Social Security that you earn throughout your working career, I would give you a chance.
One DUI, one charge of spousal abuse or child abuse, one step on the wrong side of the law, one drug charge, joining a gang...they should be banned forever.
You m
Illegal Immigration is Slave Trading. The current Illegal issue is being played on the people of many Western Cultures. It is about making the Plutocracy money and has little if anything to do otherwise. They created it and manage it. Why do you think nothing is ever done about it?
Talk about Mexican history and Ellis Island is romantic, but not really germane to the current problem. You would be better to talk about the use of domestic slaves along with the topics of off-shoring, outsourcing and technological displacement.
And Ched,
"So if you thought your race was going to become a minority, you'd be scared too."
You are saying that all of the current minorities should be afraid? Of what?
But really, that is the excuse given for a lot of horrible things from human slavery to ethnic cleansing to Genocide. The Klan used it as an excuse for lynchings, the Serbs for killing women and children and the Nazis for wholesale human extermination. Fear like that is not an excuse for anything. I understand it is the reason for alot of the racism on here but let's not excuse it.
@ThisOneGuy
I don't think Jose Antonio Romualdo Pacheco Jr. is who Latinos are looking to for today's leadership. So then - my question of current Latino leaders still stands. Sonia Maria Sotomayor is indeed a wonderful role model - for those of Puerto Rican descent. And it's improper to "mix" Mexican immigrants with "Hispanics." That's as incorrect as mixing someone from Egypt with someone from Israel and say since they are both Semitic people's that they're culture and goals are the same thing.
If you want to go through your history remember this was all Native American land before Mexican land. I mean, we can go back and back and back. That's not the point. If Mexico wants the land back, just declare war. Geographical location does not give a people an automatic pass at citizenship. Have you bothered to see what it's like in Mexico for non-Mexican citizens? Check it out sometime. It is definitely third world. A world that those living in it should try to improve rather than flee.
You have not commented on whether you think it would be a good idea for Mexicans to learn English and to respect the land that they wish to occupy. If I were to move to Germany I'd sure try to start learning the language.
Oh -- you wanted to know a Chinese-American immigrant. Former Washington Governor Gary Locke, who is the current U.S. Secretary of Commerce and former Governor of Washington, is Chinese-American. But true -- he's not a famous Chinese immigrant. And of course there are hundreds of notable Chinese that have hit the shores after the 1800's and became citizens. You see -- until 1943 -- the Chinese were ineligible for citizenship. I don't think those from Mexico had that problem.
And I AM NOT saying fear is an excuse of anything. I never said that. But it is undoubtedly a socio-reality.
So again -- I'm still waiting to hear a case for decriminalizing illegal immigration. If you want a world without borders I think that would be a wonderful place and maybe in a few hundred years if we last that long we will finally be one.
I think that all of you who choose to resort to racism to hide your insecurities are dispicable. The sad thing is that instead of looking for help to improve yourself, you choose to put down and stereotype people of different races.Do someting better with you lives and go to school, or instead of writing hatefull comments, go out and fill out applications. I feel sorry for all of you, instead of getting mad that the "illegal" hispanics are making more than you, and are able to retain their jobs (unlike many of you) use them as an example to achieve your goals.
I understand that Hispanic/Latino and Mexican are not synonymous, However in my ignorance, I am unable to differentiate between the places of origin for different surnames. Here is a list of Hispanics in congress (I understand some may be Cuban or Puerto Rican):
Rep. Nydia Velazquez, Rep. Charles A. Gonzalez, Rep. Ruben Hinojosa, Rep. John T. Salazar, Rep. Joe Baca,Rep. Xavier Becerra, Rep. Dennis Cardoza, Rep. Jim Costa, Rep. Henry Cuellar, Rep. Raul M. Grijalva, Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez, Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, Senator Robert Menendez, Rep. Grace F. Napolitano, Rep. Solomon P. Ortiz, Rep. Ed Pastor, Rep. Pedro Pierluisi, Rep. Silvestre Reyes, Rep. Ciro Rodriguez, Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, Rep. Gregorio Sablan, Rep. Linda Sanchez, Rep. Jose Serrano, Rep. Albio Sires
Do I think adults should be forced to learn English? No, the U.S. does not have an official language. Do I think it would be helpful? Yes.
Do I have an answer for a fair immigration policy? No. Should it be based on fear, racism or false stereotypes? No. Do I think it should separate families? No.
OK - ThisOneGuy. That's a great list of elected officials. My question is why does the Mexican community prefer to point to themselves as doing the jobs Americans don't want VERSUS pointing to those elected officials and saying, "See? THIS is what we're capable of!" That's the point I'm trying to make. Those leaders should be referred to by a potential electorate and the leaders themselves should be speaking out more - referencing themselves - as to highly intelligent and successful Latinos.
English as an official language - it's been tried from state to state - if for anything else the courts so everyone is "speaking" on the same page. No one is saying other languages can't be used. And of course it just makes logical sense that the better your English skills the better the job over time. You don't find tons of uneducated whites living the good life, either. It just makes sense for those that want more for their children than they had - as every immigration wave has shown - to become more assimilated rather than separatist. To embrace the theory of strength through diversity while recognizing that 100% diversity creates walls.
ThisOneGuy......Why does the Mexican government prevent their brothers from the south( Guatemala, El Salvador, Naicaragua etc..)from coming across their southern boarder to enjoy the prospect of a better life? I can't seem to figure out the double standard here.
Why do we want to promote an out-dated interpretive mess of language like English to anymore people? Is this entire thread not enough evidence we are all talking something few can understand? We cannot even define the term ILLEGAL properly.
BTW the reason our language sucks is because the Plutocrats want it that way. They want us bickering in semantic merry-go-rounds. Makes it that much easier to lift our wallets in the confusion. They have their our jargon and their definition is pretty staright forward...slaves.
Ched,
I understand your point, and I think we agree on the main issues.
@Spock
What double standard? Apply that logic to former German Democratic Republic (East Germany) should West German border guards have shot fleeing East Germans because that is what East Germans did?
Do you think that there are alot of Mexican legislators trying to come to the United States? Why do you assume that immigrants trying to leave that country support Mexican immigration laws? Do you want us to adopt Mexican laws here in the U.S.? Is that your argument?
Looks to me like Alaska, Maryland or Hawaii are better places for immigrants to live and work.
See ya later!
On the old-beaten-to-death-line of " No American will do my job" I know many americans that will take your jobs. Taking 8 hours to clean a few hotel rooms while I listen to music and banter with my friends is easy work compared to what I do! Why don't you try being a corrections officer, or a case worker with the mentally ill, or how about working in a nursing home cleaning up sh--, giving baths, lifting and turning bedridden patients all day. Don't see you trying those jobs, do you? Too much workie not good for tequilla hangover?
You anti-american pieces of dirt make me sick! Move to Mexico already!
@Chediski I can respect your questions because I feel they're sincere. If I may get into your exchange with ThisOneGuy, I would add that Hispanics (broadly speaking from Mexico south to Argentina) are essentially by and large a second generation immigrant group. We're racially diverse (black, white, native) so many times people you assume to be of one group in fact have a Hispanic heritage.
What sometimes happens is that black Hispanics will start to identify with black Americans, white Hispanics with white Americans, etc. I was watching a documentary on the Minute Men and one of the guys was a Cuban-American who happens to be of white race and identifies with the largely white group.
Also, and I'll get slammed for this from fellow Hispanics, many immigrants from Central and South America come from lower classes looking for a better life. So, to lift themselves from this socialeconomic disadvantage usually takes a generation or two. The main exception to this are Cuban-Americans since they came here because of political reasons and included many professionals (doctors, lawyers, businessmen, etc).
I do think that there is a small vacuum in Hispanic leadership to some degree, but I will argue that in terms of national spotlight, many other groups lack that notoriety.
This is a true story in California between two moms, a Hispanic and an Asian. The Hispanic was complaining that most of her time is consumed by her two boys ages 8 and 10 driving them to baseball, soccer, and football practices and games. She told her Asian friend that she had to do it because they are good athletes and someday they will turn pro and will earn big bucks. When she asked the Asian what is she doing for her boys, she told the Hispanic mom her secret. The Asian mom told the Hispanic that early in life, most Asians knew of their weaknesses and strengths and since they are usually not tall enough, not fast enough, not athletic enough compared to other kids, she brings them to the library, buys them computers, gets tutors, and gets them ready for colleges. The Asian knows that if her kids finish college, that their chances of getting high paying jobs are a lot higher than most people so this is where her priority is. On the other hand, how many supposedly good athletes make it to the pro and earn big bucks?
@Rwal222
Are you saying there are no Hispanics or Latinos doing any of those jobs? Really?
And Are you calling me Anti-American? Sounds like YOU are the one who needs to read your 9th grade U.S. history.
"Too much workie not good for tequilla hangover?"
That's great. I love when Bigots show their true colors so early in a discussion, and so eloquently too.
@ThisOneGuy
Thank you. ral222 is such a loser. Probably sitting at home unemployed, mad because his ex wife left him for a Mexican.
Axiom - thanks for the post. Thanks for taking the time. I learned something and I appreciate it.
I think you people from las vegas need to spend one week in Dearborn Mi. Then all the Whites and Mexicans will be calling yourself Brothers.
Just think how much money they could make if they were legal.
I;m mexican and don't like the word Hispanic it means in latin thief. Call me a beaner or Mexican American but don't call me Hispanic period.
I wish me like most Americans could finally learn when to hyphenate people's ethnic group more realistically. The question that comes to mind is "Chinese-American immigrant former Washington Governor Gary Locke", I don't understand how the hyphen applies here. Gary Locke, the current United States Secretary of Commerce was born on January 21, 1950 in Seattle, Washington, and is a third-generation American, not Chinese-American.
Why is it that anyone who is not a WASP referred to as then having a hyphenated identifier? Shouldn't we all accept one another fellow Americans as equals if originally born in the United States of America without the segregating hyphen to be used as a means of discrimination? I concede the hyphen use when let's say that Gary Locke was born in China and then naturalized from a Chinese citizen to a US citizen, but that is not the case. Locke was born in Seattle; furthermore, Locke is not a Chinese surname is it?
The reason immigration of Mexicans was never a problem in the past was that in the 1800's it was perfectly fine to just shoot them dead as was the case with Native Americans of the same era. Let's not kid ourselves, nor deny the past atrocities committed in our history. Were it have been possible to just push Mexicans into a reservation that is what would have been done, rather than that, it was easier to just evict them from their ranchos -- "get out of town before sundown" which was the easiest way to fortune for the westward-ho Easterners during the era of the gun (six-shooter). Other forms of enrichment used were to just withhold wages then kill them or pay them if you have to, but never what was their worth.
I don't think this article is about immigration, or about the low wages Hispanics earn at large when compared to other groups in America. I understand Hispanics as a group are voiceless in our society and it is not as romantic to defend them as it is to defend other groups of people. Hispanic is not synonyms with Mexican ("ThisOneGuy"), most people who think it is are just lacking understanding not necessarily racist, as was the case with greedy folks, they just want what was not theirs, not racist.
The exploitation of peoples in America has always been the case, and as a capitalist society I don't think change is in America's near future. I am all for cheap labor, I don't want to pay five dollars for a tomato, do you? The problem is like the deregulation of Pro-Sports, when you force any industry to redistribute more profit to the lower ranks then inflation will be around the corner. I suppose the real point here is not whether Hispanics earn less than other households, but that Hispanics earn more in Hawaii than in other places in America, or could it be that since Hawaiian' are brown skinned then maybe we think of them as Hispanics too.
Fact is that while a person might earn more in one place over another, the cost of living is the true barometer at the end of the day whether one earns more, not the actual net pay.
If you are not brown you are not from this continent. Stop bitching ,if ya dont like it find your family tree and go back to europe where you really belong. do u really think you are from the americas!!!you are from europe dumb dumb..
"Hispanic households are earning more money in Nevada than in most states, with a smaller gap between the earnings of those households and the state median income than in California, Arizona and Utah."
That's because Nevada jobs don't require an education. The average Hispanic is well qualified for a job in Nevada.
"Taking 8 hours to clean a few hotel rooms while I listen to music and banter with my friends is easy work compared to what I do!"
Really? Have you ever done it? Have you ever tried to clean 16 hotel rooms in an 8 hour period, making sure that there is not one stray crumb on the carpet or one hair in the sink? Listen to music and banter with their coworkers? No time for that if you want to go home after 8 hours. And trust me, they do have to deal with plenty of s**t (and vomit and used condoms and other nastyness) and some guests are obnoxious enough to be considered mentally ill.
I did the room cleaning thing for 2 days as part of my hotel management internship and at the end of each day I was exhausted. That is a job that I would never want to do, especially for the meager pay they get.
Leave it up to our politicians to tell the nation that they are trying to figure out ways to create more jobs for our unemployed citizens. If they would only send the illegal immigrants back to their homelands,WHALAH!, jobs for our citizens. 2 birds with one stone.
President Obama and Harry Reid have failed Nevadans with their inability to focus on getting people back to work.
In terms of who deserves a job - everyone who wants one does.
In terms of Silicon Valley, the sad thing there is that there illegals, those on visa status who refuse to hire native born Americans. They require that their applicants speak their dialect - such as Mandarin. If not, they do not give you a job. It seems that the visa system should be canceled or limited during times of high employment. There are many highly educated engineers in Silicon Valley, who were born in the US, who are now discriminated against as they do not speak Mandarin.
American born Hispanics deserve good jobs. Hispanics who have their citizenship deserve good jobs. Illegals do not - and its about time Obama, Reid, and Pelosi gets jobs for those who were born in the US. and to discriminate against those who can go home to the country they were born in and are citizens of and can get a job there.
If employment improves and the labor force requires more workers, there are legal ways to work in the US. At that time, the government can admit more workers.
In the meantime - shame on Harry Reid for robbing native born Nevadans of having a job. Vote him out of office in November - this is very important for all to do to ensure you have a job or can find a job.
Go home Harry - its time for you to be unemployed for the rest of your life.
These liberal Sun workers sure do like to stifle free speech, especially when it concerns the hispanic topics haha.
Why the obsession with race?
Why do white people feel entitlement. Get up and do something.
And, go to school, too. Learn about economics. The illegals are here becuase, the American economy needs this cheap labor. That is why the government turns a blind eye.
By the way. I am hispanic, I earn $85,000 a year. How? education, hard work, and dedication.
Well stated Axiom.
By the way I'm Mexican. I am the most interesting man in the world.
Ted Bundy - notice you said your 'friend' was gonna "go home for awhile"... you notice he doesn't even consider this Country 'home' so why the hell is he here to begin with? I have a better idea for 'your friend'.... he can GO HOME AND STAY THERE.
WAKE UP AMERICA BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE. Whether you are Demo, or Repub, you can see what is happening, come ovember, we all as Citizens of this country should vote those out of office who are giving this country away.
Wow so now hispanic=illegal immigrant. Why are people so ignorant and stupid. Just because it said hispanic people assume illegal. Not all hispanics living in the Unites States are illegal. I'm hispanic, I was born in the United States, and I am not illegal. I almost feel sorry for these idiots...oh wait I don't.
Guialera, doesn't mean anything where your born matters. Many anchor babies are just using a loophole to claim that status. Chances are your parents were not "born" here, so that is what the others were talking about.
Oh ye morons from LV, I bid you farewell again. I will come back to harass you in another life, but it's time for me to leave this cesspool for greener pastures.
In parting, I want to add to this lively discussion by adding that over 50% of your locked up criminals are of the Hispanic persuasion. A looking peek at LV's most wanted fugitives shows 7 "Hispanics" (conquered by la madre patria once again, lol) and one Negro fellow. My oh my, what a lovely town you have, with such hard working Hispanics!
What would live be like without these illegal criminals? Maybe old people could land fast food jobs that pay $12 hr overtime now. 9 out of 10 "Hello, Can I take your o-der?" types are of the Hispanic persuasion. Hey, I'm on to something! Most criminals are Hispanic. Most fast food employees are Hispanic. Most wanted criminals are Hispanic. Bingo! Hispanics are bottom feeders! Once they become a majority and elect Sr Perez to be your mayor in around 10-20 years, Vegas will finally self implode under the weight of it's own worthlessness. Good riddance, scum bags! Enjoy your burritos in hell!

LV most wanted. Nice!
PS. The reason there's no data for Wyoming is that's gods country. Illegals are tarred, feathered and sent packing on the next jackass to Sinaloa. Ranchers don't hire Mexicans, we hire Americans. We don't have much crime or welfare either. Watch, learn and follow our lead if you want to save your s-ity. Nuff said.
If I lived her, I'd wressle up some friends, grab some baseball bats and jump in a few pick-ups and visit all the construction sites in town asking beaners to show their documentation, then Billy Joe would check each criminal, I mean Hispanic in the e-verify website via a wireless laptop then we'd pounce on the illegal once it's confirmed his papers are as fake a dbag39's lady gaga like genitalia and we'd slam them to the ground and put our knees in the small of their backs and hog time them until the authorities arrived. That's what I'd do if I were you.
I like to know how they came up with those median income numbers, they must've generally counted all the government employees, pro athletes, tv actors and actresses in the mix or something.
I was very close to being hispanic, although I was born at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center ..as I was 800 feet away from being :
BORN IN EAST L.A. !!!
There is nothing wrong with the hispanic race, culture or anything as long as you are a legal American citizen, bathe regularly, respect that English is the language of the US, and wave an American flag not the Mexican flag.. Too much to ask?
