State, city offices closed today for Nevada Day
Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009 | 2:05 a.m.
State and city offices will be closed today in observance of Nevada Day, a state holiday to celebrate Nevada’s admission as the 36th state on Oct. 31, 1864.
The holiday has been recognized since 1939, but the state Legislature voted in 1999 to move it to the last Friday in October. Since then, Nevada Day hasn’t always been observed on the anniversary date of Nevada’s official statehood.
Closures include:
• All public and private schools, including Nevada State College, the College of Southern Nevada and the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
• The Department of Motor Vehicles.
• Municipal offices, including city and county agencies. Parks and recreation facilities in Henderson and Clark County will be closed.
• Municipal and state courts. Federal courts will remain open.
Boulder City offices that are usually closed on Fridays will not take an extra day off. Agencies that are normally open on Fridays, such as the Business License and City Clerk’s offices will be closed.
Henderson offices that are normally closed on Fridays will not take an extra day off.
Nevada State Bank locations closed last year but will remain open today this year. Larger banks such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Washington Mutual will be open.
Utility providers and post offices will be open as usual.
