A preliminary hearing for Roger Mayweather, boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s uncle and trainer, who is accused of beating up a 25-year-old female boxer, has been set.
Mayweather, 48, was arrested Aug. 2 after allegedly engaging in a scuffle with a boxer he once trained, according to court documents. He is charged with felony coercion and battery-strangulation.
This morning Mayweather’s attorney, Bucky Buchanan, appeared before Justice of the Peace Joseph Sciscento to discuss a motion he filed to recall Mayweather’s bench warrant, which was issued after Mayweather failed to appear in court for arraignment on Oct. 2.
Sciscento quashed the bench warrant. Mayweather posted bail when he was arrested in August and is not currently in custody, according to jail records.
Mayweather's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 15. He did not appear in court today.
Buchanan said Mayweather will plead not guilty to the charges because the whole incident is a misunderstanding.
“I think all will be resolved at the preliminary hearing,” Buchanan said.
He said he might even try to negotiate the case after speaking to the alleged victim.
Police responded to an apartment on Rock Springs Drive after receiving a disconnected 911 call, according to police reports. The address is near the intersection of Washington Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard. A woman told police she had been punched in the ribs and hit Mayweather with a lamp during a struggle.
The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to MountainView Hospital for treatment. Police said the woman had redness around her throat and there were signs of strangulation.

A "mis-understanding"...?
Lemme guess:
She tripped and fell, and in order to keep her from falling to the floor and hurting herself, he grabbed her with both hands around the neck.
Good thing she wasn't REALLY injured.
Hey, Justice o' the Peace, I have some SWAMP LAND if you want some. Oh, I see, you already bought THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE...(maybe more than once?)
