A Henderson teacher has been named Nevada Teacher of the Year by the Nevada Department of Education.

Math teacher Kathleen Schaeffer of Bob Miller Middle School was honored with the title during a surprise assembly Tuesday. Schaeffer has been with the middle school since it opened in 2000.

Guests included former Gov. Bob Miller, the school’s namesake, Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction Keith Rheault and Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen.

Bob Miller Middle School is the only school in the state to have two teachers receive the distinction. In 2007, reading teacher Melanie Teemant was selected for the honor.

“This isn’t just about me,” Schaeffer said in a news release. “I want our students to know that all your teachers are here for you.”

Schaefeer is noted for having developed the Bobcat Summer Institute, which helps fifth graders prepare to enter middle school. She has more than 22 years of experience in public education.

This is the first time Schaeffer has won the award.
