Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., said the jobless rate in Southern Nevada is 14.4 percent during a press conference addressing green job grants to the state.
The state isn't expected to release its numbers until Friday, but if Berkley is correct, that would be another increase for Las Vegas.
September's jobless rate was 13.9 percent in Las Vegas.
When asked if the 14.4 percent figure was for the month of October, Berkley said it's an unofficial number and she has no official knowledge of the jobless rate to be released Friday.
A spokeswoman for the state's Employment Department said the 14.4 percent figure is incorrect. The state will release its numbers Friday, she said.
Berkley said she came to the conclusion based on the ongoing deterioration in the economy, including additional layoffs since the last jobless figures were released.
She also said her common sense told her that the state lags behind national numbers, which also increased. The national jobless rate is 10.2 percent.

nothing more than a democrat doing everything they can to prop up their agenda.
The democrats including Berkley and Titus own these numbers given their support for an ill advised poorly written stimulus plan and even poorer health care plan. While they may suffer defeat in November, we as a nation and state will be hurting long after these self serving politicians leave office. The road to hell is paved with those with "good intentions."
Samson1: The road to hell is also paved with misperceptions, a lack of understanding of how the world works, and a lack of even what used to be construed as a high school education. The Las Vegas Sun ought to separate name calling and label gymnastics from thoughtful, informed observations of what really matters.
First I'm not a resident of your state, however I do love the state and vacation in Nevada every year for the last ten years or so. I just want to make a comment regarding the other comments being made here. First;the stimulus plan was first enacted by the former administration;that would be George W and his bunch of idiots.Second;is that all politicians are corrupt and self serving, that is the business that they are in and it has been that way since the begining of all politics. At least the democrats are making some sort of effort to make changes that could be positive, better than any conservative republicans that do not, will not,or cannot, except that change is good and inevitable. Now if you want change, weather you are a democrat, republican, independent,or whatever the only way we are going to turn this around and get our country back is going to be;term limits and getting off your respective butts and voting, you know, speak up and let your voice be heard in a proactive manner, not reactive. An opinion from an Indenpendent Alaskan.
Carsonnewshound- I missed your thoughtful interpretation of the issues. The real issue is that democrats and republicans will not fix this mess. Unfortunately, both parties are filled with individuals more concerned with partisan politics rather than finding real solutions to these problems. Informed discourse with agreement and or disagreement on issues was lost when respect for other peoples views was met with disdain and contempt.
