UPDATED STORY: Steven Tyler: Aerosmith not breaking up; Perry: New singer needed
Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry said today that singer Steven Tyler quit the band following a recent concert in Abu Dhabi.
Bassist Tom Hamilton told the Boston Herald’s Inside Track that there is dissension among the “Bad Boys From Boston,” but that he hopes things can be worked out. He dismissed a report that guitarist Brad Whitford discussed the possiblity of Aerosmith finding a new frontman.
However, Perry told the Las Vegas Sun today that he believes Tyler is history.
“Steven quit as far as I can tell,” Perry said from his Boston home. “I don’t know anymore than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don’t know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don’t know.”
Part of the problem, he says, is that Tyler doesn’t return his phone calls.
“He’s notorious for that,” Perry said. “That’s one thing I’ve learned to live with. I try to overlook it. I like to pick my battles. Frankly, the last few months I’ve been wanting not to rock the boat. I don’t want him canceling any more gigs. We really wanted to do these last four. We just kind of didn’t want to call him out or anything and get him anymore pissed off, for whatever reason. So we just let things lie. So we did the gigs and, like I said, I got off the plane and saw this online. That’s how I know about it.”
Perry will perform his Joe Perry Project Nov. 28 at the Las Vegas House of Blues, performing from his latest release “Have Guitar, Will Travel.”
Most of Aerosmith’s recent world tour was canceled in August after Tyler fell from the stage at a Sturgis, S.D., concert and broke his shoulder. The band members were unhappy with Tyler over the incident. However, Aerosmith salvaged the final leg of the tour, including two shows in Hawaii and one Sunday at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix before more than 50,000 fans.
After the Middle Eastern concert the band parted ways with Perry going to London to attend the Classic Rock & Roll of Honour awards ceremony on Monday. Perry said he arrived home in Boston on Wednesday and read on the Internet that Tyler planned to leave the band.
“He has had no contact with me or the other band members,” Perry said.
He says he hopes to keep Aerosmith together, with or without Tyler, but he was so stunned by recent developments he doesn’t know what’s going to happen.
“Right now I’m adjusting to how we’re going to go on,” Perry says. “Aerosmith is such a powerful band, I mean it’s like a steam locomotive. You just can’t disregard 40 years of four guys who play together as well as they do. We’re just trying to – at least I am – trying to figure out what direction the band should take.
“As far as replacing Steve, it’s not just about that, it’s also four guys that play extremely well together, and I’m not going to see that go to waste. I really don’t know what path it’s going to take at this point, but we’ll probably find somebody else that will sing in those spots where we need a singer and then we’ll be able to move the Aerosmith up a notch, move the vibe up a notch.”
Perry believes Tyler has been planning on leaving for a while.
“Obviously he hasn’t been giving 100 percent to this thing for a long time,” Perry said. “He’s obviously had this planned for a long time. To disregard his brothers to the point where we have to find out about it on the Internet – it’s like, 'See you later, Bud.’ I still care for him as a person, or at least the person I used to know. But things change.”
Aerosmith rose to popularity in the ’70s with a combination of hard rock and power ballads only to be derailed by drug and alcohol abuse. After Tyler completed rehab in 1986, the band rose to prominence again. There were rumors last year that Tyler had checked back into rehab after more than 20 years of sobriety.
Perry himself left the band for two years in 1979. While he was away he created the solo Joe Perry Project, which has now released five albums.
“The circumstances were different then,” Perry said. “We’d been touring pretty much nonstop for eight years and the band was just pretty much burned out on each other. We needed a break. We needed to take a vacation but blood was running so hot I just had to leave, had to get out of there. But I certainly wasn’t going to stop playing so I put out a solo project.”

Tyler will be back as soon as he needs more $
or more coke
Jeez, how old are these idiots, 11???
Tyler has plenty of $$$$. This band is done.
only band i know that has more greatest hits albums than albums those hits came from.
Wasn't Steve Tyler around when the Declaration of Independence was signed?
I saw them perform in Vegas last they were here. Tyler's voice was shot. The band however was as tight as a band could be musically. I find it hard to believe he left the band by letting them know on the Internet. That sounds crazy.
I highly recommend to Aerosmith do do what Journey did, find a replacement of a sound-a-like for Tyler on YouTube.
Anyone who's surprised by this should be warned not to watch Titanic, because the boat sinks.
For PeterGun, no offense, but you're so frickin' wrong - "In a way I think Robert Plant was right when he refused to go back on tour with Led Zeppelin ... They are old and they are not good musicians anymore ..."
Sure, they are probably tired of the Zep tunes, but to say they're not good musicians anymore? You clearly know nothing about music. Robert Plant's been winning award after award with his recent work with Allison Krause. And perhaps you should check out what John Paul Jones has been doing with Dave Grohl and Josh Homme. Their new project Them Crooked Vultures is the most musically exciting thing I've heard - ever.
JPJ doesn't come across as "old" or a "bad" musician. More like a kid in a candy store, just playing killer tunes and having a blast.
I thought these guys were all dead already?
If the Rolling Stones can still do it, why can't Aerosmith?
aerosmith without steven tyler? doesn't work.
Steven is 62. Robert Plant is 62. Mick is 67!
These dudes do NOT have the voices of yore, folks. A LOT of abuse on those vocal cords.
One big reason Plant didn't want to do a Zep tour is because he says there ain't NO WAY he
hits the high notes. But yes, of the 3, Robert seems to have aged the most gracefully, does he not?
Disappointing... For as long as they've been together... come on... 'bam1969' is right... "aerosmith without steven tyler? doesn't work."
I hope they don't pull a Van Halen. that's a sad deal. Farcical even. I think Edward is on his last legs too. He looks about 80.
"It's better to burn out than fade away."
I bet Steven cried when the dinosaurs died out.
he band was unhappy when tyler fell?i wonder how tyler felt about it!
OH MY GODDESS I WISH JOE PERRY WOULD READ THIS:
Dude, just shut it! I am really sick of you bashing Tyler since the Sturgis incident. It's just frickin WRONG!!! You're like a gossipy stupid airhead, talking all this trash about Steven, I mean who the hell do you think you are man? This dude has been your friend for how many years? Maybe he has some BS going on, and maybe he needs you to be a LOYAL friend instead of some bitter idiot! Damn I'm pissed!
And all this nonsense about replacing THE BEST ROCK SINGER, yeah, good luck with that.......
Does anybody know if he was able to use his "life alert" pendant when he fell?
"Help I've fallen and I can't get up"
BTW, Eddie Van Halen looks 118 not 80, come on gmag do your homework. 8^)
Actually, I was still pretty contented when DLR and Van Halen first parted ways. Van Hagar was not quite as good as Van Halen, but Sammy could belt out vocals with the very best of them, and the band still rocked for another good decade. Meanwhile, Roth was as good -and hilarious- as ever with his new backing band. I had the best of both worlds (no pun intended).
But then Roth went off and became a lounge lizard, Eddie fell into the abyss, and rock has never been the same.
No question though, Van Halen in its original incarnation was the best of them all.
Aerosmith?...Well, for those of you who like them, I say "to each his own." No skin of my back.
The Who are the greatest rock band ever. Don't believe me? Listen to "Young Man Blues" or "My Generation" from the "Live at Leeds" album (make sure to turn the volume up as high as it will go).
The Who died along with Keith Moon, only the band didn't have the good sense to realize it. They were actually getting back to being a great band when Zack Starkey came on board, but then John Entwistle died. The greatest rhythm section in rock history was done.
The reason I bring this up is the so-called Who shows since then have been pretty pathetic; the band can't hold a candle to their former selves.
Here's to hoping that Aerosmith has the good sense to hang it up.
Saw Aerosmith for the first time in 1972 when they took second billing to Fairport Convention. Bruce Springsteen opened the show. Aerosmith blew Springsteen off the stage.
Aerosmith should have stopped touring 10 years ago. they suck now and will never be good again, with or without the crybaby, Tyler.
Maybe Aerosmith could get Sammy Hagar to take the lead.
Maybe its time for the whole band to take a hiatus or just retire for awhile. Instead of starting a tour and then letting the fans down by cancelling some dates because of band fatique.
Not sure what the big f'in deal is here. They came on big in the '70s, burned out, came back twice as big (God Bless 'em. Not an easy thing to do.) Maybe Tyler is just cooked on it at this point. Honestly, they kind of lost me after Toys and Rocks. If you've ever seen the SNL spoof where every Aerosmith power-ballad sounds like the same friggin' song, that's about where they're at these days. Makes me crazy when bands pull in hit writing formula machines like Desmond Child anyway. They did better than fine without that influence. I can't imagine Todd Rundgren bringing in a hired gun to help him pen hits. Ugh...
I saw Steven Tyler fall off the stage in Springfield, IL in the 80's because he was loaded! It was the second song of the show and he fell right in front of me. My friend tried to punch him on his way down and I boycotted them for 20 years.
I finally gave in and saw them in St. Louis and they ROCKED! Are they what they once were - no! But they were still great.
Joe Perry is one of the greatest guitarists of our time and I hope to continues. He didn't forget the chords and hit every note of every lead!
Remember "Rock Star: INXS"? Let's see "Rock Star: Aereosmith"! Bring it on Brooke Burke!
what about Adam Lambert taking over as front man....he sure can hit the notes.
Come on! Tyler and Perry are amazingly talented and hot. Who cares how old they are? I think for this band to call it quits is a colossal mistake. I am younger than they are but no one can rock the way they can. Tyler and Perry are both THE best rock and roll has to offer. I paid $600 for 2 seats but the show was cancelled. Steven- come on- your true fans support you just as they always have an will. Get it together with Joe and the guys. You are rock and roll legends- if you have to end it one day, do it with a bang, not this way. We love you Aerosmith. And yes, I went through the whole registration just to get my message out there. You owe me "Dream On" live one more time AND at least one more album!
Maybe Tyler can't go out with a BANG, The guy is in his 60's. Im 47 and I love this band but I can understand that time and other things have taken a toll. Let it be.
If he can come back he will. If not they will always be Aerosmith and always be legends.
I have been a fan of Aerosmith sence the begining, and with out Steven Tyler they wouldn't make it now. maybe 30 yrs ago but everyone knows Tyler as Aerosmith, no one could take his place now. If Steven Tyler want to call it quits, this fan fully understands. Don't you think it's time for him to take the time for hisself, his daughter and grandson. He is 61 and it is time for him to rest and injoy the rest of his life other than working all the time. No matter what happens, the true fans will always be there for Steven Tyler and for the rest of Aerosmith.
Steven still rocks.....He always will, you just can't replace some things and he's one! Hope he changes his mind and can return, maybe theres a hidden reason he wants to call it quits. I'm sure he's getting tired, and it's probably time for him to hang up his guitar, still I hope he has some left in him.
I saw them in late July at Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI and they were GREAT!!! I also saw them back in the late 80's/early 90's (memory faded) and they were just about as good now as then. He could not hit the really high notes completely but the movement of all the band was great. They looked like they were having a blast up there. They were running around, hugging, joking and messing with eachother. I cant believe that they were not having a great time then and its so bad now. I am glad that I was able to see them before they broke up and I hope they get back together soon. My 13yr old son came with us and was able to see a great band from my era, which he LOVED!!
They didn't suck, they didn't seem to be fighting, it seemed to be the complete opposite. I hope it is just a bad month or 2 and everyone gets back together soon.
Alright, here I get my two cents worth... If you've never been on the road before, you've got no room to judge anyone, TRULY. The road after long periods is like being drug behind a Harley. Only the strong survive. However, I'm begging Tyler not to take the Steve Perry route. Steve broke his hip and quit. I sware if you look him up (on the net RIGHT NOW), he has his own website and the photo he chose is one of him and HIS CAT!!! I kid you not! *oh, how sad*. Anyways, people get older and some have mortality checks. Tyler just had one. Give him time to sort it out before you bury him!
Lastly, I want to say - I really like Arnel Pineda, Journeys' Steve replacement... but God can the boy stop bouncing up and down like a chimp??? geez! Besides that signature voice, Steve used to give the girls that look...and since I are one, it's hard to find that moving target on Arnel hahahaha
Went to an Aerosmith concert last year, and yes not the same as 20 years ago, same ole songs too, but be real no Tyler, No Aerosmith! Perry what a frikin joke he is, last year during the show, he (perry) did a little solo with his new stuff, could not wait for him to stop, he ruined the concert for us. So Perry take a long look in the mirror, and honestly listen to your solo crap, you stink. So, join the un-employed line with the other 1 in 10 Americans, for if indeed Tyler has left, then you are over also. Just save enough cash or crack to buy a wheel chair.
Love Aerosmith,Would Love to see ADAM LAMBERT as Frontman for the band.He is the greatest, and does he have the pipes for high notes. He sang an Aerosmith song on American Idol and he would be great for the Band. He can sing anything. The band needs a new young voice, time for Steven Tyler to call it QUITS.Adam would have no problem filling his shoes.
Maybe Tyler doesn't have to quit just take a breather for awhile unless he's so totally burned out on anymore Aerosmith projects. If he quits, what will he do? Maybe he will start another band like Slash did. But G'N'R wasn't the same after they all split. Aerosmith might go the same way.
tyler, jagger, rose, plant: all those dudes should call it quits. plant looks like a very old, very tired, homosexual lion...and sounds worse.
I've got a good idea: Replace him with Janice Dickinson.
naaa I dont think he will be back hes 67 for god sakes!! I would have broke up the band years ago, At least at the age of 60 would have done one last album called retired.. dont get me wrong I love aerosmith!!!I grew up to them im not in my 60 lol but they came out when I was born they were the first band I ever seen they have lots of money they dont need any more.. time to really enjoy life no more worries about where they have to play who they have to please they better do it now before life is over.. so guy's with a sadness in my hart but much love and respect and thank you for all the years of great times.. I think its time you guys lie down the drums gutiar's and mic, and really enjoy life before you dont have one to enjoy
I saw Aerosmith (albeit, briefly) at Sturgis and I would DEFINITELY go see them again - but not without Steven Tyler. His voice was AWESOME and the band sounded great. It was unfortunate that he fell off the stage and for the other members to be mad at him for getting injured is insane. Yes, they are old - but they still know how to ROCK! They sound MUCH better than some of that new crap being put out!
The majority of the people on here who give bad marks to Steve are more than likely the ones who listen to Barney's greatest hits.
I don't care what anyone says..these guys are all legends, every single one of them are true legends. The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin..all of them are the grandfathers of rock n roll and rich ones at that. If it were not for the bands of yesterday, you wouldn't have the bands today. Every new band there is today has learned the tricks of the trade from the old school, and many bands of yesterday are idols to the new bands today. So enough is enough..give Steve a break, maybe he would like to spend some quality time with his kids and grandchildren. But that will never stop you from pulling out that Aerosmith CD and jamming to the tunes.
They use to play at my High School dances in the 70"s, didn't like them then, don't care for them not!
Maybe they can hire Arnel Pineda, Journey's lead vocalist. Check this out...

There are alot of people that need to get their story straight, including, Joe Perry. I read Stevens interview and if that is quitting I'll be president next year. This is what is wrong with half of America, they need jobs, so they aren't commenting on things they know nothing about.
Here's another one, what a powerful voice and a vocal chameleon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUApE3U3c...
I used to think that the old musicians needed to get out of the business. Then I read a quote from Joe Cocker that basically said playing music was their job, not a hobby. Aerosmith came out in 1969 at Woodstock. Sure, the music they had out in the 70s and 80s sounded better because it was new then. So what if the guys in the band are grandfathers.........They are doing what they enjoy. If you don't like Aerosmith or don't like them now, you are entitled to your opinion just like everyone else on the Earth. If Steven Tyler fell off a stage and broke his shoulder earlier this year, so what? How many people you know have been bucked off a horse and don't ride anymore.....been in a car wreck and won't be a passenger.....been attacked in some way and won't be alone after dark. All of us are mortal. Our souls will live for eternity in one of two places: Heaven with Jesus Christ, or hell. We only have so much time on this Earth. If Steven Tyler wants to spend time with his family, who are we to say he can't? So what if Joe Perry doesn't impress you? When a person becomes famous, his or her whole life is there for anyone to critique. If a bunch of men who had good music out when I was in grade school want to still play, then let them. If you don't like it, don't buy a ticket or their music.
Wow, I can't believe how many morons there are on here talkin smack about these guys. What does their age have to do with anything. Just because you don't care for them doesn't mean there aren't millions of others who don't. So just go back to listening to your emo crap that you listen to and shut up. You're all just jealous cuz you're still workin some crappy job for minimum wage while they're doing what they love. Would you give something up that you love just because you've been doing it for 40 years? I doubt it. Its real easy to criticize when you're sittin behind your computer and no one else is around.
As far as I'm concerned, this is a sad sad day. I truly hope they can hash things out and keep going cuz there is no better than AEROSMITH.
No Tyler=no Aerosmith. Nothing lasts forever.
Aerosmith was the greatest effen rock band to come out of Boston this side of J. Geils Band. They made their mark, and have left the music loving public with a rich catalogue of kick ass music to play VERY LOUD ALWAYS at parties and various events, or just to crank up the music system when you in that kind of mood, more importantly, Steve Tyler gave us the most important gem..that is Liv! Rock on!!
I can not believe this can be true!!! This band I have loved forever. They helped me with thier music during some very hard times in my life. I have seen them every year since 1995 (i was to young to go before then) I last saw them a few months ago in The Woodlands and they totally rocked. Steven I love you!!! I wish the best for you and everyone!! Keep in mind that your fans are going to miss you and we will always ...ALWAYS be here. Best wishes
First time I saw Aerosmith they opened for some band named the Guess Who back in the 70's.This band Aerosmith(unknown at the time) just blew everyone in the arena away. What a treat that was!
Well think about it folks... Brad hit his head, Tom has cancer, Joe had knee surgury, Steven was in rehab and fell off stage. On the plus... Joey has a book and Joe has an album. They are only human and they should have waited an extra year to go on tour. They'll get back togeather. You don't create something so wonderful just to mess it up. They got back togeather once they'll do it again... Look at the Rolling stones Mick and Keith can't stand each other. They will be back togeather
I always chuckle at blogs like this one.
If you type more than one or two lines....we stopped reading.
I really hate to hear that steaven tyler has quit aerosmith. I really think they did good together and need to contenue aerosmith!
This is one of the most awsome band ever and needs to stay that way
You know what There not quiting aerosmith! LIERS
Have seen Aerosmith at least 20 times, met the members twice, but will never forget a special moment.
I was at the last Joe Perry Project-once a rocker show in Salisbury Beach, when Steven Tyler came on stage with Joe and announced Aerosmith was getting back together.
They hugged and jammed Back in the Saddle and then Train, was pure bliss...
thats a bunch of crap he should wait till hes not
drugged to say something so rediculus.:(
but as huski siad its probably not going to happen anyway. right?
how manny people can say that they have seen aerosmih in concert. because i have not. im only 12
sad day in rock history... but it was a great run! aerosmith will be greatly missed... and will miss out on their talent for the rest of their lives....
I would hate to see any of you guys go!!! But sounds like to me that Joe should stop with the gossip until he finds out from Steve what the hell is going on!!!! Or if Joe isnt getting along with the rest of the band, maybe he should persue his solo career because Steven cant be replaced, but guitar players can be!!!!Really Steve might need some one to talk to other than some one just worrying about money.
Paul Schaeffer...or use splices w/current trick image technology fronting Tiny Tim...Yes to shock power!
Steve Tyler is "Aerosmith", he like alot of people, have their bad days, but he is the voice of this band, there can be no replacement. If the band thinks this is a option, then just try it and watch how your sales plummet! I saw him last time he was in OKC and he rocked the house, his voice was still there and it was awesome I've been a fan for over 30 years, his music will stay forever, the haters.... well just kiss it!
This brings me down soo much, I have always wanted to see an Aerosmith concert. They have always been my favorite band ever with the best music ever. Now I can't. And If they get a new singer it will NEVER be the same. And all you ppl need to stop bs-ing about tyler. Your just jealous of him. Man, I cried whenever I got the news that he quit.):
Tyler was and still is the MAN. Although he probably never will return. I and no one else knows exactly why. Remember this...He lives taller than Plant, Jagger, Morrison, The Beatles, or anyone else!!! Sure he had problems....but what rock star didn't!!! I for one will always listen to his voice with the same excitment I always have. LONG LIVE TYLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
JOE, DO NOT REPLACE HIM.....KISS HIS ASS AND BRING HIM BACK FOR A FAIRWELL TOUR...BE SURE TO HIT DETORIT BECAUSE WE LOVE HIM HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS: I WILL BE THERE
