Vladimir Lagerev pleaded not guilty this morning to charges of driving while intoxicated ending in death in the April 15 crash that killed UNLV freshman Lindsay Bennett.

A trial date of Oct. 26 was set for Lagerev, 45, before District Judge James Bixler.

Bennett, a Coronado High School graduate, died after police said her 2006 Honda was hit head-on about 9:30 p.m. April 15 on the Windmill off-ramp of Interstate 215. She died two days later of her injuries, just days before her 19th birthday.

An indictment charging Lagerev alleges he was driving his 2008 Acura the wrong way on the off-ramp, hitting Bennett’s car. Prosecutors say Lagerev had a blood-alcohol level of 0.20, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08.

Lagerev’s attorney Stephen Stein said he would file a motion to reduce the $250,000 bail set by Justice of the Peace Nancy Oesterle. Lagerev remains in the Clark County Detention Center.

Stein also told District Court Judge Kevin Williams on Wednesday that he plans to run independent blood tests and offer expert witnesses during the trial. Lagerev’s arraignment was moved from Wednesday to this morning to allow a Russian interpreter to be present.
