Man shot by officer charged with attempted murder

Sunday, May 24, 2009 | 3:36 p.m.

Officer-involved shooting

Police on Sunday identified a Las Vegas man shot by an officer Saturday evening at a condominium complex in the southwest valley.

Metro Police responded at 5:14 p.m. Saturday to the Las Verdes condominiums in the 4800 block of South Torrey Pines Drive on a report of a man who apparently had taken pills and was suicidal, police said. Officers arrived at the residence, approached the open door and tried to speak to a man inside.

The man, identified as Sasa Pudar, 37, was alone in the residence, police said.

Police said Pudar had blood on him and blood was seen on the floor. He also was in possession of a large screwdriver, police said.

Authorities said the man rushed "in an aggressive manner" from the door toward the porch outside where officers were standing. An officer then shot Pudar, and he fell to the ground and was taken into custody, Metro Police said.

Pudar was taken to University Medical Center for treatment and was booked absentia in the Clark County Detention Center in connection with attempted murder on a police officer with a deadly weapon.

The name of the officer involved wasn't being released Sunday.

  1. Phrases that do not pass the smell test:

    "had lights and sirens on"

    "in an aggressive manner"

    I call BS

  2. ..a very large screw driver....flat head?

  3. They should charge the officer who shot they guy with attempted murder.

  4. I guess they just use the tazers after the handcuffs are on.

  5. Why is it that every time the police do thier job they are put into the defencive mode. Let them do the job that they are being paid to do.
    Protect and serve.
The man in this story sounds like that he wanted to commit cop-a-cide. Police do your jobs to the best that you can now days.
Thank you for trying to keep are streets safe.
And staying alive while you do it.

  6. A large screwdriver?

Come on guys... We're taking this deadly force justification a little too far here.

Are the police in our city so out of shape, they can't handle a guy with a screwdriver without...

ahem... *Popping a cap in his arse*? Gangster police!!

  7. Some of you are really stupid. I hope you NEVER need the police for an actual emergency. A screwdriver is still considered a weapon. You can stab someone with it. The cop was in the RIGHT (as much as you disagree....) with shooting the suspect for coming at the cop the way he did. You are a complete fool if you go after any cop with ANY weapon. You are just asking to be shot.

Some of you are just completely stupid and I hope when you do have a real emergency, the police "forget" about your 911 call. ;) A few less idiots in Vegas would do us all some good.

  8. If this guy died everyone would be saying "Why did they have to kill him." The guy didn't die which shows some restraint on behalf of Metro. If you were standing with a gun and someone tried to stab you with a screwdriver, you'd shoot too.

  9. Jspence07,
    Did you wittness this event?

  10. How about a shot in the knee?

  11. Attempted murder seems way over the line to me. Maybe attempted assault on an officer, but how the hell do they prove that the guy had any intention of killing anyone(besides himself).

If this gets plastered all over the news, get ready for another lynch mob calling for the sheriffs head.

  12. He's lucky he didn't have an ice-cream in his hands or the cop would have emptied his clip in him point blank.

  13. Travislv, is there something in this article that makes you believe he wasn't shot in the knee? He may have been.

Either way, he's lucky to be alive! Seriously, any dumba$$ that charges an armed police officer with a screwdriver is too stupid to live! Why do I feel like this should fall under the category of natural selection.

  14. I say if you are in any way trying to harm a police officer, you are asking for it. Why should they have to put up with anyone threatening them in any way. Maybe next time an idiot is thinking of doing something stupid like coming after a cop with a screwdriver, they will think twice!

  16. Glad the officers weren't hurt. One more idiot off the streets and behind bars where he belongs. I appreciate the officers that serve and protect each and everyone of us..even those among us that constantly criticize the police and their every action. It's funny to me, how people can be so judgmental when it comes to the police and yet, they sit at home and do nothing to clean up this city. They just judge and complain about the police, until they need them and then, boy oh boy you better watch out! Armchair judges are the lowest form of pond scum.

  19. starrynite7: you do not know the man in this story I did, why he flipped out is beyond me but by far the man is not a scumbag.

If the officers felt they were in danger...well they did what they had to.

  20. Cowboy cops. If the police cannot disarm someone with a screw driver we need new cops.

  21. If the cops would have dragged him out to the street after he was shot and ran him over with the police cruiser, Then and only then, would I beleive they were justified in their actions.
RULE # 1 Make sure your lights are on and everything will be justified.
RULE # 2 Do not use the tazar guns that are provided for you to use, they cause to much controversy! (BEING LESS LETHAL THAN A POLICE CRUISER OR A HIGH POWERED SERVICE WEAPON).
I sure hope the police are never issued (LARGE SCREWDRIVERS) as service weapons!!!!!!!!!
We as citizens won't stand a chance!!!!!!!!!

  22. "Glad the officers weren't hurt. One more idiot off the streets and behind bars where he belongs."

starrynite7 -- Sounds like the man was in his own home. There you go again making it all up out of thin air.

Why didn't the cops just back off? Their jurisdiction ends pretty much where one's home boundaries begin.

  24. My only question is why is this officer being abused for performing his duty as required by law?
You see a guy armed with a weapon ( a screwdriver can kill you just like a gun can) and you drop him with one shot, that's the nature of the job: dangerous. There are four dead cops in Oakland and 5 dead cops in Pittsburgh recently that prove the job is dangerous as heck.

  25. afveteran -- what part about this shooting victim being in his own home do you need explained to you? For the most part cops are like vampires, they have to be invited in to have jurisdiction in someone's home. Since he didn't call them what right did they have violating his home?

Your analogies are meaningless unless those cops were killed in their victims' homes.

  26. KillerB,

Maybe you're right, they should have left him to kill himself.

  27. friday -- if that was what he was doing, the police tried to take care of that for him, no? Now it looks like just another Metro coverup.

  28. As a primary witness to this tragedy, I'd like to say that judgement made in the absence of facts only serves to make a bad situation worse for ALL parties involved.

  29. Killer8, I'm guessing the cops didn't try to kill him. If they wanted to kill him I think that perhaps he would be dead. I'm sure (I don't know for a fact) that the cops are taught to shoot and kill, and to shoot without killing.

  30. SpeculateNot -- what you said!

futureRN -- as with all thing, reality is one thing to count on as being completely different from either speculation or training.

  31. All small arms courses teach to shoot for center mass, there is no such thing as a "wing'em" shot.

Wait, there is the "wing-em" shot in the movies, then again, in the moives the good guy can run around and never get shot= aka chuck (Texas Ranger) Norris.

If you don't want to kill the Perp. use the baton, the tazer, even mase will do the job, but if you use a 9 mil, or a "skater-blaster" someone may end up dead.

Never, I mean never use a Leathal weapon if a fellow officer is in the line of fire.

In my opinion it sounds like a good shoot, but the LEO should never have put themselves into such a close position as that.

Authorities said the man rushed "in an aggressive manner" from the door toward the porch outside where officers were standing. An officer then shot Pudar, and he fell to the ground and was taken into custody, Metro Police said.

Once they assesed that the Perp. had a scerwdriver, one of the LEO's should have drawn a tazer and the others should have step back "stand-down" to allow it's emplementation.

Now then, if they approched the open door guns dranw, that is all LEO had time for, shoot for center mass. Hope for the best, ask questions later.

Not everybody makes the same call, it boils down to judgement and intent. In LEO'S judgement the Perp. intended a leathal attack, so, take him down. Failure to act is not an option, any inaction by LEO would most likely have resulted in an unwanted consequence. It is well known that to be in control you must be the one calling the shots, no pun intended, not reacting to them.

I support the action by LEO at this point, although, I may have a change of mind when the rest of the story comes out.

  32. Metro officers are totally lacking in training. They make the gangs in this town look like knitting circles.

  33. Another bad cop, we need a new police force in this city.

  34. I just want to say that I've had nothing but positive encounters with Metro and Henderson officers. In all of my dealings with the police they have been nothing but kind, friendly, and helpful...even when writing me a ticket. I imagine I would get a different vibe if I were all bloody and charging at them with a screwdriver. Let's hope that never happens...fiiingers crooosssssed!
