A Chicago-area gang member and convicted sex offender was arrested in Las Vegas today for a parole violation in the area of Washington Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard.

Teddy McDowell, 38, was wanted by the Illinois Department of Corrections for a parole violation stemming from a 1997 rape conviction. McDowell has been out of prison for a month after serving 12 1/2 years of a 25-year sentence.

Officials in Illinois contacted U.S. marshals in Nevada after they said McDowell might have fled to Las Vegas after he removed an electronic monitoring device he was ordered to wear during his parole. Within 48 hours of the notification, McDowell was arrested.

McDowell was booked into the Clark County Detention Center pending his extradition to Illinois.
