Early voting for the April 7 primary election got underway Wednesday in North Las Vegas, which traditionally begins the election season in Southern Nevada. Other local governments don’t start early voting until Saturday.

Early voting in North Las Vegas continues from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday at City Hall.

The two extra days are necessary for voters to have two full weeks of early voting because city offices are closed on Fridays.

In Henderson, Las Vegas, Boulder City, Mesquite and Clark County, early voting begins March 21 and ends April 3. The last day to vote early in North Las Vegas is April 2.

Each entity will have government offices and mobile sites available throughout the county.

About 50 people had voted during the first four hours at North Las Vegas City Hall, 2200 Civic Center Drive, said Barbara Andolina, deputy city clerk.

“We’ve had a pretty good turnout for the middle of the week,” she said. “We expect this year to be a little heavier because there is a mayor up this year.”

Voter turnout in the 2007 primary election for all cities combined was about 15 percent and dropped to about 11.5 percent in the general election.

The last day to register to vote for the June 2 municipal general election is May 12.
