Board delays decision on suspending doctor’s license

Nevada medical authorities have postponed a hearing where they will consider suspending the license of a Las Vegas surgeon accused of major errors that preceded the deaths of two patients and resulted in severe complications for three others.

The Nevada State Osteopathic Medicine Board filed five complaints March 4 against Dr. Ming-Wei “Daniel” Wu, alleging multiple counts of dangerous conduct, most of them occurring at Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center.

The board will now consider the suspension at a March 28 meeting. In the meantime, Wu has agreed that any surgical procedures performed in Las Vegas requiring general anesthesia will be under the supervision of a proctor -- a surgeon who will be in the surgery with him, board officials said Wednesday. Wu also agreed not to perform any surgical procedures requiring general anesthesia at Desert View Hospital in Pahrump, pending the outcome of the March board's hearing.

Wu has been licensed in Nevada since 2005. He received his training at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif.

The five complaints filed by the board include allegations that Wu ruptured a patient's bowels, misdiagnosed a mass when none was present, ruptured a patient's aorta and failed to properly stitch a patient, causing sepsis and eventually death.

Wu's attorney claims that the surgeon should not lose his license because he's been retrained since the incidents.
