M Resort Opens

After a 10-minute fireworks display over the resort's pool, the Las Vegas Valley's newest resort casino opened its doors to a crowd of cheering and curious locals.

The newly opened M Resort Spa Casino said today it's hiring another 250 employees in order to better service customers, some of whom have endured long lines at its restaurants and rewards club signup stations.

The resort, which opened Sunday with some 1,800 workers and 390 hotel rooms, said it's also adding gaming machines and ATM/cash kiosks and has been opening its restaurant terraces early to serve diners.

The property at Las Vegas Boulevard and St. Rose Parkway said food and beverage business during its first three days was nearly double the 5,000 daily covers -- or parties served -- that were projected.

"We're taking immediate steps to hire more motivated team members to reinforce our service commitment and assist our guests. The demand is there and the people have expressed their love for our product in just these few short days. Our guests are coming from all over Las Vegas, including in-market tourists, not just from our neighboring communities south of the Strip," Chairman and Chief Executive Anthony Marnell III said in a statement.

The hotel-casino said that overall it has been twice as busy as projected and has added sign-up stations for its iMagine Rewards Club, bringing the number to 20 enrollment stations. Some 20,000 customers had signed up during the first few days of operation for the rewards club, which had a goal of enrolling 25,000 people during the entire month.

The resort plans to have the new employees in place by next week.

  1. Good idea, the place is packed every night thus far. Beautiful place by the way, hope the success is longed-lived.

  2. Are they going to send out those discount books every month to every house in the surrounding zip codes? I bet that has a lot to do with the volume...

  3. Every guest in the new resort is one less in an existing one. The 250 added here will be met with thousands laid off in others. The current leaders of our country have decimated Las Vegas and pretending the numbers are different doesn't change the story. Thank you Mr. Obama and Sen. harry Reid. You killed the goose. Are you happy?

  4. What does it say about management, that they were not prepared to be as busy as they were? Poor planning, clearly it would have been better to be overstaffed than understaffed.
    Makes for bad press.

  5. Not sure I agree with that, denro. I know overstaffing an opening is SOP for a new resort, but these aren't ordinary times.

If they'd overhired and laid off several hundred a month or two later, they'd be cutting loose the employees in a nasty labor market... bad for morale and your reputation as an employer. And it would've inevitably touched off a wave of "Is M failing?" stories and rumors.

So this was probably the smartest route... ramp up hiring to meet actual demand. News that anyone is hiring these days is great press for the company doing the hiring.

  6. I really hate to see what will happen to all those jobs once the hub-bub of any new opening dies down and business evens out. When I worked in the grocery industry we used to use employee's from some of our other stores to help out during the 'grand opening' phase rather than over-hire only to have to lay off 30 or 60 days down the road when business leveled off.

  7. Neiman, travel to Las Vegas has been declining for nine months straight. Mr. Obama made his comment about businesses surviving on federal tax dollars not organizing junkets to LV in February.

Why do you continue to blame the President for LV's long term decline? If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were obsessed.

  8. I hear you, anonymous_guy...probably no way to have gotten this perfect...it just seems kind of a shame to have poor service right out of the gate.

  9. I still can't believe some just don't get it that Obama's words of admonition were about businesses going ANYWHERE on tax payer dollars. I believe he mentioned Vegas because that IS where Wells Fargo was headed, during Super Bowl week-end for their so-called 'convention'. Is it really THAT hard to get the gist of what he said - and trust me, I'm not even an Obama supporter - I am, however, someone who knew EXACTLY the point he was trying to make - so like the guy or not I refuse to read more into his statement or try to twist his words just to have yet another thing to criticize him for -

  10. True enough, denro. They seem to have gotten a black eye from that in their opening days. Jane Ann Morrison's column today was scathing.

Kind of a shame... we could use some good news in this city for once.

  11. Obama has SLAMMED this city, after doing what he does best....coming here and saying ANYTHING to get elected. No Earmarks...ha! He is about to sign a bill that contains over 8,000 of them!! Is he just too dumb to know what they look like?? Millions of new jobs...ha, anything to get elected. And in the next 20 months he will add more debt to this country than GWB did in eight years.

I just hope when those new jobs start following from the sky, one hits me square in the face :)

  12. These comments are always full of angry cynics, bullsh*t politics and misinformation. Bah.

  13. It just seems kind of knee jerk as a reaction. They are busy now because everyone wants to see the place, then things will settle down. Then what will happen to these 250 workers?

  14. On its first full day of operation, the M Resort had a single-line 25-cent video poker machine with a progressive starting at $10,000 instead of the undoubtedly intended $1,000. A patron hit the jackpot. Rather than hassle the winner or try to outright cheat him, as many casinos have done in similar situations, after a thirty-minute delay, the M Resort paid the patron the $10,009, closed the bank of machines and politely asked the other players to cash out and play other machines. No harassment of the other patrons, no threats, no security guards, etc. In view of all the casino misbehavior we routinely see, it as refreshing to see a casino behave properly in this situation.

It is too early to form an overall opinion of the M, but from this incident, it appears to be on the right track. Many other casino managers could learn from this incident.

  15. I like Anthony's trophy wife...mmmm...mmm

  16. Well it's been about a week now since I utilized this casino's 'contact us' option on their website - all to no avail apparently. I haven't heard a word back either to explain why or reassure that future mailings will be sent to Green Valley and Green Valley Ranch zips 89014, 89052. I think a week is enough time to handle an email response - surely they have a fulltime marketing department no?? I'll update if and when I ever receive a response but don't hold your breath. Great customer service - NOT. I wonder if I'd sent an email asking what the easiest way to dump a ton of money at their table games would be - wonder if I'd have gotten a response to THAT?? Probably...
