Letter to the editor:

Limbaugh’s arguments easy to counter

Republicans, having given up on Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, are back to Rush Limbaugh as point man. Could there be a happier choice for Democrats?

To be a Rushophile you must accept a mishmash of dubious propositions:

1) Liberals infiltrated the past three Republican administrations and drove the economy off a cliff.

2) Practically any government program is socialism.

3) Our present economic meltdown is no different from any other economic crisis we have faced.

4) The working class has to learn to suck it up, stop whining and realize it’s their fault they’re losers.

Regarding dubious proposition No. 1:

When you have the bully pulpit for 20 of the past 28 years and control Congress for 12 of the past 14, you’re expected to take charge, not huddle in the corner while your political enemies subvert the system.

With respect to dubious proposition No. 2:

These are tough times. Most Americans are thankful for the machinery government has put in place to cushion the disruptions endemic to a modern industrial state.

Regarding dubious proposition No. 3:

No serious economist questions that government must act in today’s crisis. (That Rush would disagree is not surprising. For all his pose as an infallible prophet, in reality his record as a seer is lousy. Name a Bush II Era flub he saw coming.)

Finally, with respect to dubious proposition No. 4:

The working class is not going to respond to criticism of its work ethic with a happy thumbs up. Expect a different digit — especially if the charge comes from a windy fellow with a 15-hour (sometimes nine-hour) workweek that consists of repeating all the reactionary cliches he learned at his daddy’s knee.
