City Council approves new pawn shop

Cheyenne Fairways Business Center

Summerlin residents will have a new pawn shop closer to home to hock their goods.

The City Council unanimously approved the permit for Cash America, parent company of SuperPawn, on Feb. 18 to move into a vacant building in the Cheyenne Fairways Business Center.

A few residents in the area opposed the store, fearing it would negatively affect the property values.

The shopping center is on Cheyenne Avenue west of Durango Drive.

The store would offer payday loans and would accept guns without ammunition but will not sell them on site, said Jennifer Lazovich, a local attorney representing the company

The city received seven cards protesting the pawn shop and three area residents opposed it at a Jan. 12 neighborhood meeting with company representatives.

The company agreed to operating hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays and will not advertise its payday loan business on its signs, Lazovich said.
