After losing the June 2 Henderson mayoral election to fellow City Councilman Andy Hafen by a scant 45 votes out of 19,355 cast, Steve Kirk has informed the city that he intends to request a recount.

Kirk has until Friday — three days after the City Council certified the election Tuesday night — to file the request. Henderson City Clerk Monica Simmons said she received a courtesy call from Kirk this afternoon to inform her that he intends to file the request.

“I haven’t received the written request, but I have heard from him, letting me know his intention,” Simmons said.

By law, Kirk can request a recount in 5 percent of the city’s precincts, which in this case means eight precincts, by filing a written request and paying the estimated cost of the recount.

Simmons said the cost will be about $1,600.

The city last conducted a recount in 2007, when Hafen narrowly retained his council seat by a 1.34 percent margin over challenger Thomas Wagner.

Neither Kirk nor Hafen could be immediately reached for comment.
