Christopher "Chris" John Maestas, 43, a Henderson native, passed away July 9 after a long battle with cancer.

Born Nov. 26, 1965, Maestas served on the Henderson Blue Ribbon Commission on Youth Opportunity, Education Excellence and the library board, where he was instrumental in institutionalizing UNLV's library; and he managed Paul Ruth's campaign for mayor.

He was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, where he served as altar boy and choir director.

Maestas received his bachelor of arts in history from UNLV and a master's in library and information sciences from The University of Pittsburgh School of Information Sciences. He had been working on his doctorate in higher education leadership.

He was a 1984 alumnus of Basic High School. He later became a teacher at the school and served as the Student Council adviser for many years.

He was instrumental in providing the Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, program.

He is survived by his parents Mary and Marshall Maestas; brothers Marshall Jr. and wife Lisa, Dennis and wife Ginny, Randall and wife Deidre; sister Liz; four nieces, two nephews, four great-nieces, five great-nephews, many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Nathan Adelson Hospice and the Arbor Foundation.

A vigil will be held 5:30-6 p.m. July 16 at Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, with a rosary to follow.

Memorial services will be held 10 a.m. July 17 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 204 S. Boulder Hwy., Henderson.
