I have lost count of how many e-mails have poured into my inbox during the past few days asking if I had considered the possibility that Sen. John Ensign might resign and that Gov. Jim Gibbons might appoint himself? Um ... yes. And so have many others. First, if he is to be believed, Ensign has no plans to resign. Second, if he does, does anyone doubt Gibbons would consider such a scheme? Third, imagine the reaction of the Senate GOP caucus to the news that a man who slept with his best friend’s wife and then had his parents pay them off is being replaced by a man accused by his wife of adultery, seen cavorting with various women around Reno and is considered the most incompetent governor in history? Oh joy.
