Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin announces that she is stepping down from her position as governor in Wasilla, Alaska, on Friday. The former Republican vice presidential candidate made the surprise announcement, saying she would step down July 26 but didn’t announce her plans.

Outgoing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Saturday laid the groundwork to take on a larger, national role after leaving state government, citing a "higher calling" with the aim of uniting the country along conservative lines.
A day after surprising even her closest friends by announcing she would step down as Alaska governor more than a year before her term was up, the controversial hockey mom was still keeping details of her future plans under wrap. But in a statement posted on Palin's Facebook account, she suggested that she had bigger plans and a national agenda she planned to push after she resigns at the end of the month.
"I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint," she said.
Palin also cast herself as a victim and blasted the media, calling the response to her announcement "predictable" and out of touch.
"How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it's about country," the statement said. "And though it's honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make."
Palin's personal spokeswoman, Meghan Stapleton, confirmed to The Associated Press that the Facebook posting was written by the governor.
The abruptness of her announcement and the mystery surrounding her plans has fed widespread speculation. But Palin attorney Thomas Van Flein on Saturday warned legal action may be taken against bloggers and publications that reprint what he calls fraudulent claims.
"To the extent several websites, most notably liberal Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore, are now claiming as 'fact' that Governor Palin resigned because she is 'under federal investigation' for embezzlement or other criminal wrongdoing, we will be exploring legal options this week to address such defamation," Van Flein said in a statement. "This is to provide notice to Ms. Moore, and those who re-publish the defamation, such as Huffington Post, MSNBC, the New York Times and The Washington Post, that the Palins will not allow them to propagate defamatory material without answering to this in a court of law."
Palin has kept a low profile since her abrupt announcement Friday at a hastily called news conference at her home in suburban Wasilla, outside Anchorage. All of her public communication since then has been on the social networking sites Facebook and Twitter, or through statements released by her office.
At the same time, Palin informed her spokesman David Murrow early Saturday that someone using the name "exgovsarahpalin" on Twitter was spreading a false rumor that there was to be a party at her suburban home in Wasilla, outside Anchorage. Palin was afraid her home would be mobbed, and security was dispatched, Murrow said.
With only a few weeks before she steps down on July 26, and Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell takes her place, the governor spent the Fourth of July weekend in the state capital, Juneau, but was only spotted briefly on the sidelines of the city's parade.
She had been invited to ride in a convertible, as she did last year, but never told organizers whether she would attend.
Juneau parade director Jean Sztuk said officials drew up banners in case Palin showed and was willing to take part.
As the last of the parade's clowns and marching bands headed past her, Sztuk gave up on Palin. "What governor wants to be at the end of the parade?" she asked.
Her low-profile and vague Internet messages left mounting questions about her plans for the future shrouded in mystery. Will she lay the groundwork for a 2012 presidential bid? Will she find a high-profile place in the private sector, maybe on the speech circuit? Will she drop out of the limelight and focus on her five children?
Her constituents, for one, wanted to know, especially in Juneau, where she has struggled to win over residents.
"I think she owes it to Alaskans to tell us why," said state Sen. Dennis Egan, D-Juneau, the son of Alaska's first governor, Bill Egan.
Egan, hosting a 50th anniversary statehood ceremony, said he was disappointed Palin decided not to finish out her term, which was scheduled to end in 2010.
"It's sad she abandoned us at this critical time," said Egan, who was appointed by Palin to an open seat on the last day of the legislative session in April, after a protracted battle with Senate Democrats.
Palin's departure can't come soon enough for Laurel Carlton, a waitress at the Capital Cafe in the Baranof Hotel, where the city's political movers and shakers meet every morning before walking a few blocks to the Capitol.
"I think she has a game plan that's not Alaska, and hasn't been for awhile," Carlton said.
She noted Palin has a book deal, and seems headed for the national stage.
"If you're really not going to stay and do your job every day, you should leave anyway, and so the sooner the better so somebody can step in and actually do the job," Carlton said.
And as far as Carlton is concerned, Palin doesn't need to explain why she's leaving.
"We don't care. We just want her gone," she said.
Palin, whose popularity in Alaska has waned amid ongoing ethics investigations, gave many reasons for stepping down: She didn't want to be a lame-duck governor; she was tired of the tasteless jokes aimed at her five children, including her son Trig, who has Down syndrome; she felt she could do more in another, still-to-be-defined role.
Sen. John McCain didn't rule out a return to politics for his former running mate, saying Saturday he believes "she will continue to play an important leadership role in the Republican Party and our nation." He gave no other details.
Even Parnell, who plans to run for re-election after finishing out Palin's term, said he was shocked at first when he learned of his boss' decision.
"But then as she began to articulate her reasons, I began to understand better," he said. "And nobody - unless they've been in her position and understood what she has gone through and dealt with and who she is as a person - really understands."

On most days I usually support the Sun's infamous peanut gallery, today is not one of those days.
Whether you like her or not, she is absolutely right when she says that a lame duck politician only uses their short term time behind the proverbial desk to secure his or her personal future, and very little is put forward for their constituents.
One can only wish that all politicians would leave office when they have decided not to run for their seat again, or have found themselves in a compromising position so they can't run again.

For once, I'll praise her and say she did the citizens of Alaska a favor by jumping ship when the waters got choppy. A real leader would've worked to help their constituents. Palin, clearly, was no leader... just a coward who flees at the first sign of trouble.
In other words, she's the future of the Republican party.
Okay, a few questions:
1) Why did she decide to announce this today? What couldn't wait until next Monday, instead of dumping this on a late afternoon before a major holiday weekend? You can tell by the speech (even Republican commentators are calling it "erratic") that this was not planned well in advance.
2) Why would she resign as a way to prep for a 2012 run? If she chose not to run for a second term in 2010, she would still have an entire year to lay ground work for a '12 Presidential race.
3) How does buckling under media pressure, and multiple investigations, as a Governor make you qualified to be President? The media pressure and investigations, if anything, are even worse at that level.
4) How can the GOP voters (or any voters at all) count on her to be reliable, if she's willing to throw in the towel without a reason beyond "the media got to me"?
I've had month-old flounder that smells better than the story that's being pushed. The other shoe hasn't dropped yet.

You can't honestly stand there and expect me to believe that something isn't going on behind-the-scenes that we don't know about. No governor just up and quits for no reason at all, especially since Governor Palin has always been a fighter when it comes to the "evil liberal media".

Do you know that Senators do not run anything? Not even a budget. They have no tangible responsibilities. Their main responsibility is to show up and vote, but they don't even have to do that. Sometimes, even when they do show up and vote, they can vote "present" as Obama did at least 130 times.
Governors are head of the executive branch of their state, control budgeting, appoint officials (including judges), veto state bills and have a significant role in legislation. Governor's also act as commander-in-chief of their state's National Guard, have power to commute or pardon a criminal, fill vacancies in the state's Senate seats, and have significant involvement in foreign affairs.

Governor Palin is quitting. She's quitting only 2 1/2 years into her first 4-year term.
No amount of spin can salvage that statement - and that statement is a career-ender.
If she can't stand up to the withering fire from the press, how would she do standing up to unfriendly nations? If she can't weather this storm, what about when the 5 or 6 storms that have to be weathered simultaneously as President?

With the latest announcement by Sarah Palin that she is stepping down as Governor of Alaska, the GOP seems to be subscribing to the notion that "thriving on chaos" as described in Tom Peter's best selling book, is the road to success. Palin has had enough! Her resignation speech told the public what it needed to hear as an explanation for her decision--at least it did me. She and Todd have legal bills to the tune of half a million dollars, and she's sick and tired of being hamstrung by her job. Palin needs to make more money, and break out of the trap she's in so that she can crusade for conservative causes--neither she nor anyone else knows just where this will lead her--but it's time for a fresh start.
I think it is easy to both overestimate Palin as well as to underestimate her. She has the ability to fire up a crowd, as I was a witness to in last years election when I attended a rally in Henderson, Nevada where she gave a rousing speech. She electrified the crowd. I know that left leaning liberals hate to hear that,but they are filled with hate anyway--for anything conservative, including most assuredly Sarah Palin.
Nevertheless, if I had to guess right now, I'd say that we are in for quite a bit more of Sarah Palin between now and election time in 2012. I believe it when she says that she is not retreating,merely advancing in another direction!

It sounds as though a lot of you didn't actually watch her announcement. She is very clear about the reasons why she is stepping down as Alaska's Governor. Her reasons are not selfish either. For those of you saying you don't understand why she's quitting, please go online and watch her announcement rather than letting the Sun tell you what she said. The only thing not clear is is what she plans on doing next.

There's no offer on the table right now. And if this was to kick off a 2012 campaign, why schedule it for the afternoon of July 3rd? She picked the biggest "take out the trash day" of the year? You pick a day like that to HIDE something, not to announce a bold new direction.

Loren Michaels and Tiny must be hand-wringing at the timing, as SNL is not currently taping, and this would, again, put their ratings over the top for three to four weeks.
This decision is not about being a quitter though, and Ms. Palin should not be admonished for that. She appears ambitious, so it may be about stepping down before Alaska revenues from fossil fuels decline before 2012, casting pale over everything she took credit for.
Whatever she truly wants, it probably will have a price, as in a book deal and money for a 2012 Presidential endorsement, provided she can carve a niche in the far right Republican base between Rush, Newt and Huckaby.
Whether it's a book to read, or endorsement to sell, hopefully in the interim period she will learn proper syntax and sentence construction, because it's hard to figure out how someone can keep politically shooting themselves in the head without a reason.
I think it's pretty apparent another shoe is about to drop. If she resigns, she can't be impeached. Just wait a couple of weeks--this should blow the Sanford story out of the news.
