Get involved with 4-H

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension 4-H youth development program will hold its annual open house from 5:30 to 7:30 Feb. 6.

Clubs from around the Las Vegas valley will demonstrate their rocketry, robotics and small animal programs.

The event is free and will be held at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

4-H is a nationwide club teaching youth ages 5-19 about leadership, citizenship and life skills.

Foundation to offer scholarships

The Public Education Foundation is offering more than $700,000 in scholarships to high school seniors planning to continue their education at an accredited college, university or other post-secondary institution.

Applications are due by Feb. 10.

High school to host guitar performance

Bishop Gorman High School will host Guitar Jam on Feb. 12. The event, which will feature student musicians, begins at 7 p.m. in the Timothy N. Poster Black Box Theatre at the school, 5959 S. Hualapai Way.

Admission is $8.

The performance will feature everything from heavy metal to acoustic.

Scholarship available to graduating seniors

LARS Research Institute, Inc. — a nonprofit company in Las Vegas with a focus of developing, evaluating and implementing drug prevention programs in schools — is offering a scholarship to seniors graduating during the 2008-2009 academic year.

The Neal Lyon High School Drug Prevention Scholarship will be awarded to the student author of the best essay examining the need for drug abuse prevention in the schools.

Essays should be between 1,000 and 1,500 words.

The essay should examine the need for school-based drug prevention, how it works and whether current resources in the schools adequately address drug prevention from a young person's point of view.

Entries must be postmarked by March 15. They may be mailed to Weide & Miller, Ltd., 7251 W. Lake Mead Blvd. Suite 350, Las Vegas, NV 89128.
