Guard unit to return home

The Nevada Army National Guard's 140th Military Police Brigade Liaison Detachment is scheduled to return home Friday after a yearlong deployment in Iraq.

The unit's 12 members will be welcomed home at the Las Vegas Readiness Center, 4500 W. Silverado Ranch Blvd., at 3 p.m.

The Henderson-based unit deployed in February 2008, just five months after its creation. While in Iraq, its members oversaw detainee operations and acted as a go-between for the multi-national force and Iraqi government.

Their tasks included overseeing the treatment of detainees and ensuring that international treaties establishing the treatment of prisoners be followed.

Henderson's other National Guard military police unit, the 72nd Military Police Co., returned from a nine-month deployment to Iraq in September.

The Nevada National Guard has about 300 soldiers deployed worldwide.
