Nevada State Prison warden to retire Jan. 30

CARSON CITY – William “Bill” Donat, warden at the century old Nevada State Prison in Carson City since 2005, says he will retire Jan. 30.

Donat has worked in the prison system for nearly 30 years, starting as a trainee and moving to the top job at the prison that Gov. Jim Gibbons now wants to close.

Donat established the Western Nevada College inmate college program at the prison and opened the department’s initial inmate classification unit in Southern Nevada.

Howard Skolnik, director of the state Department of Corrections, said Donat’s loyal service will be missed. No replacement has been named.

Donat served two years in the Peace Corp, during a break in his employment in the prison system.
