Centennial pins Palo Verde and Mojave

Expanded coverage

Walking off the mats at Palo Verde for the last time wasn't easy for senior Dave Castro, who started wrestling as a freshman.

"I never imagined this as a freshman. It just went by so fast," he said. "It's a good feeling to leave with a win, unfortunately it's not a team win."

Castro won his last home match, defeating Centennial's Brendan Taggard by a score of 10-5, but it wasn't enough to help the Panthers in a 51-19 loss to Centennial on Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs benefited from pins by Spencer Worden, Colton Price, Trey McGhin and Austin Scarlett to lead the way.

"We want to keep improving and hit our stride come regionals," coach Terry Moll said.

The Panthers hosted Centennial and Mojave in a three-team dual meet. It was the school's lone home meet of the season.

Centennial went 2-0 while Palo Verde went 1-1 and Mojave was 0-2.

Centennial and Palo Verde each started off the night with wins against Mojave.

The Panthers and Rattlers squared off in the opener with Palo Verde coming out winners, 42-29.

Panthers Anthony Turner and Robert Buckhannan were the only winners by pinfall. Turner's pin came in the second round while Buckhannan's was in the first.

Cenntennial and Mojave faced each other in the second match and the Bulldogs took an early 30-4 lead with the help of four Mojave forfeits. The Bulldogs also had pins by McGhin and Scarlett to extend their lead and go on to a 52-22 win.

All three teams are wrapping up their regular season and preparing for the Sunrise Region tournament Feb. 6 and 7 at Las Vegas High.

"We need to maintain our intensity, keep focused, drill hard and fine tune the little things," Moll said.
