A driver was arrested in connection with DUI this morning after authorities say his vehicle plowed through the steel pylons protecting the Fremont Street Experience and struck a pedestrian.

Metro Police responded at 7:58 a.m. to the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Fremont Street on a report that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian.

Investigators said a 1991 Geo traveling westbound on Fremont failed to stop for a red light, crossed Las Vegas Boulevard and drove into the Fremont Street Experience pedestrian area. The vehicle then continued westbound and struck a pedestrian, leaving him critically injured, police said.

The Geo continued westbound, eventually rolling onto its roof, authorities said.

The driver, identified as Torrence Lewis, 30, of Las Vegas, ran from the overturned vehicle but was quickly apprehended by officers at the scene, authorities said. He was taken to University Medical Center, where he was treated for moderate injuries and released.

Lewis was arrested in connection with felony DUI and felony hit and run.

The pedestrian, 62-year-old George Weddle, of Las Vegas, was taken to UMC in critical condition, police said.
