LV and the arts

Planned arts center will require support

With the long-awaited Smith Center for the Performing Arts scheduled to break ground this year in downtown Las Vegas, Southern Nevadans will be that much closer to having the world-class cultural facility this community can sorely use. But having a performing arts center is meaningless unless residents show greater support for the arts.

Kristen Peterson wrote on Dec. 30 for the Las Vegas Sun, a sister publication of In Business Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Philharmonic and Las Vegas Art Museum are among organizations struggling financially in the dismal economy.

Despite tough times, the community cannot afford to let these entities wither away. “After all, the arts are for our benefit,” Peterson wrote.

Supporting the arts is a necessary investment to elevate Las Vegas to the level of America’s greatest cities.
