Sun City Summerlin voters OK new fire station

Sun City Summerlin voters have approved a new fire station, the first in the community.

The mail-in ballots were counted Thursday with 5,518 approving the station and 657 against it.

A total of 6,301 ballots, representing 81 percent of homeowners, were returned with 125 ballots being rejected. The measure to amend the community’s governing documents to allow for the station needed approval from two-thirds of the 7,781 homeowners and received 71 percent favorable votes.

The city can now move forward with building the 7,000-square-foot facility on the northwest corner of Del Webb Boulevard and Sundial Drive.

When complete, it will house a pumper truck and a rescue ambulance. The cost is estimated at $4 million.

The goal of the new station is to lower increasing response times. According to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Chief Greg Gammon, Sun City Summerlin falls into a gap in the department’s existing coverage areas, resulting in response times that could exceed the city’s goal of four to six minutes.

In 2007, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded to 1,783 medical calls and 18 house fires in Sun City Summerlin.
