Letter to the editor:

Bullet train to L.A. is a stimulating idea

Detroit, Las Vegas and the Pacific Coast must join hands. Detroit cannot sell enough cars, however good, to be profitable in this diminished market.

However, as during World War II, when Detroit went from making cars to planes and tanks with federal financing, the federal government should now foster its construction of high-speed trains. The skilled workers are there and need jobs.

At the same time, we need a high-speed train system between Las Vegas and Los Angeles to attract tourists and owners of second homes, and to sustain and create jobs. A bullet train would speed people here in two hours, less time than flying takes, with parking and security; and it would require new roadbeds, which alone would provide jobs, and the wages would have a multiplier effect.

It might even be profitable if tolls were placed on Interstate 15 and tickets were sold on the trains. Furthermore, it would save gas and reduce pollution; thus, a green project.

Surely, this is a stimulus package worth immediate consideration.
