Run to benefit Henderson Libraries

The Henderson Libraries will host the second annual Read & Run for Your Health Feb. 28 at the James I. Gibson Library on Water Street in an effort to raise money to purchase books, DVDs and other materials, as well as to pay for guest speakers.

Assistant Library Manager Bryan Fearn hoped the 7 a.m., 5K run and one-mile walk would equal last year's performance of raising more than $8,000, while drawing roughly 400 participants.

"This is a well-organized race," he said. "We've partnered with the Las Vegas Running Team. Everybody gets an official time, and all the participants receive a goody bag and T-shirt."

Fearn said the idea sprouted from colleagues wanting to host an event in downtown Henderson. Many of them were runners.

"It's a fun-filled family event," he said. "You're not only supporting Henderson Libraries but being healthy and active."

The age brackets range from 10 and under to 80 and over with four-year intervals in between. The course will start and finish on Water Street, and turn onto Major Avenue, Van Wagenen Street and Victory Road. Awards will be given to the top three overall male and female winners and the top three male and female finishers in each age division.

Those who register by Feb. 20 pay $25; between Feb. 21-26 participants pay $30, and those who register on race day pay $35.

Fearn encouraged residents to support the library and visit downtown's Water Street District.

"It should be a fun overall day," he said.
