Call center could bring 1,000 jobs to Las Vegas

An agreement reached between a telecommunications company and the city of Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency could bring up to 1,000 new jobs to the valley.

TELUS plans to create a Las Vegas-based call center at 2251 S. Decatur Blvd. The 104,000-square-foot building used to be home to Montgomery Ward and Healthcare America call centers. TELUS began building renovations in December 2008 and plans to open in March 2009.

“The creation of these types of jobs is always welcome in any community, but they are particularly relevant in light of the current worldwide economic situation,” Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said in a statement Thursday.

Officials credited a partnership between the Nevada Development Authority and the city of Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency in making the agreement happen. TELUS executives said Las Vegas was a good fit for its expansion because of the number of Spanish speakers in the city.

“Not only does the community have a wealth of skilled individuals fluent in both Spanish and English, but it is one of the United States’ fastest-growing communities with a strong labor force and business-friendly environment,” TELUS international president Jeff Puritt said in a statement.

The Redevelopment Agency will provide $300,000 a year for five years to go toward equipment and building improvements. TELUS leased the building for 51 months, and the money is incentive for the company to stay and continue leasing or buy the building.

The company plans to hire 500 local employees by year's end and will open with 100 employees next month. The company could eventually employ more than 1,000 workers in Las Vegas. Interested applicants can contact the company at [email protected].
