Neighbors at odds with church over huge crosses
Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009 | 5:07 p.m.
Green Valley neighbors prevailed at the county government building today, arguing their views of Las Vegas and their rural community would be encroached upon by three crosses of 70, 80 and 90 feet that South Hills Church wanted to erect.
After hearing Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak’s idea to restrict the cross heights to 50, 40 and 35 feet, the church withdrew its request for its use permit.
Zoning restricts heights of “accessory structures” in that area, which is generally located at the Las Vegas Beltway and St. Rose Parkway, to 25 feet.
Pastor Bret Johnson said a “benefactor” had donated the $350,000 used to design and erect the crosses for his non-denominational church of roughly 2,000 members. He wanted to go back and see what kind of design would work at the lower heights, and if the benefactor would still want them put up.
