Study to look at economic effect of city projects

Monday, Feb. 2, 2009 | 3:01 p.m.

The City of Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency will unveil an independent study at its Wednesday meeting that focuses on the economic and fiscal impact of Redevelopment Agency projects.

The Redevelopment Agency retained the Las Vegas-based consulting firm Applied Analysis to evaluate the agency’s projects. Projects evaluated include those that are under construction or recently completed, those pending regulatory approval and those in the pipeline within the RDA area.

The Redevelopment Agency has taken some heat on recent projects, including a proposed new City Hall, from the Culinary Union and others. Culinary leaders have said the proposed City Hall, which is part of a larger project from Cleveland-based developer Forest City Enterprises, is an unnecessary expenditure of tax dollars.

Culinary leaders submitted petitions last month that would force ballot questions on redevelopment agency projects and the city's redevelopment plan.

The Redevelopment Agency Meeting takes place in conjunction with the Las Vegas City Council Meeting.

    Interesting it wasn't mentioned here.

  2. Fiscal impact studies are generally pretty bogus studies. That has already been covered: http://npri.org/blog/real-impact

"Usually, the economics applied to determine the impact are as fuzzy as the implications -- as it turns out, the "economic impact" is less important and less impressive once you understand what these people are really talking about."
