Men convicted in federal cocaine robbery sting in Las Vegas

Three men who conspired to steal a large quantity of cocaine in Las Vegas have been convicted, the U.S. Attorney announced today.

A jury convicted Steven Golden, 23, of North Las Vegas, and Justin Spentz, 20, of Las Vegas, Thursday after a three-day trial. In a separate trial last week for the same incident, Leonard Jackson, 23, of Las Vegas, was also convicted.

The three men were arrested after planning to rob a home they believed had a stash of cocaine as part of an undercover investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The federal agents, posed as drug couriers for a Mexican organized crime group, told the three Las Vegas men about a Las Vegas drug house that had between 27 and 46 kilograms of cocaine. The defendants agreed to invade the house and steal the cocaine.

On May 15, 2008, the day of the planed robbery, the three men were arrested. Agents found two firearms and a ski mask while making the arrests.

Golden and Spentz, were convicted of conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery, conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during crimes of drug trafficking and violence. Jackson was convicted of conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery and conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute.

Golden and Spentz are scheduled to be sentenced on March 24, 2010. They face a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison. Jackson is scheduled to be sentenced on March 17, 2010. He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years on the drug charge. In addition, all three men face up to 20 years in prison on the robbery charge.
