FLASHPOINT:

Special budget concerns

So do we or do we not need a special session? The latest horrific news — June sales down 20.5 percent from June 2008 — indicates the spiraling downward will not end soon. Budget experts believe they can affix a Band-Aid by tapping into that line of credit lawmakers approved last year and by using some reserve money. But the sales tax hits the budget twice — once at the state level and once at the local, where the state has to make up money lost to the School District. So why can’t the governor, if cuts become necessary, do it by himself? He probably could, or just have Interim Finance ratify it. But wouldn’t it be more fun — for him at least — to call the Gang of 63 back? And fun for pundits, too!
