REBELS FOOTBALL:
UNLV football releases depth chart for Saturday’s opener
Trotter to start at running back, while Pointer, Purvis take starting cornerback spots
Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009 | 7:37 p.m.
The presence of the word 'or' here and there on UNLV's depth chart for next Saturday's home opener against Sacramento State shows that nothing is set in stone in Mike Sanford's lineup.
But at least this is a more solid starting point.
Highlighting the first depth chart of the 2009 regular season is junior Channing Trotter, who will start at tailback for the Rebels at Sam Boyd Stadium at 7 p.m. next weekend. Sophomore C.J. Cox, who is UNLV's top returning rusher, is listed at fourth on the depth chart behind senior Chris Brogdon and redshirt freshman Imari Thompson after re-aggravating a hamstring injury for the second time this fall just last week.
Starting at receiver are obviously senior Ryan Wolfe and sophomore Phillip Payne, while seniors Rodelin Anthony and Jerriman Robinson will be alongside them. Sophomore Kyle Watkins will start at tight end.
On defense, senior Preston Brooks is listed as a starting defensive end, while senior Jason Beauchamp — the Mountain West's top tackler from a year ago — is still listed as a starter at linebacker. He's expected to play d-end on passing downs.
In the secondary, Chris Jones and Travis Dixon are listed as starting safeties, but the word 'or' is next to both of their names, with Alex De Giacomo and Marquel Martin apparently still in the running for starting gigs.
At cornerback, junior Quinton Pointer and sophomore Deante' Purvis are listed atop the chart, while juco transfers Warren Zeigler and Mike Grant are the primary backups.

I am happy for Dixon. He has taken the move from freshman QB to safety in stride. He should be commended for his character to stick with this program. He probably could have transferred to a school where he could have played QB, but he decided to stay and work hard as a safety.
I can't wait for Saturday!!! Just 5.5 days left until kickoff.
i agree. dixon needs some love, he got a raw deal from the coaching staff last year i feel. for him not to transfer and stick with the good guys tells a lot about his character
QB'S going to safety...hmmm I believe Therrell NOW coach of safeties , has a SON on the team a QB,before coming to UNLV. Guess what his new position is SAFETY.
Character to stay in a position that is not your position is tough and ridiculous.
WHAT THE F*&%k is this all about?
