110-degree heat to hit Las Vegas area

Excessive heat warning issued for areas below 4,000 feet in area

Keep an eye on your elderly relatives, children and pets who are out in the heat today.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today for the Las Vegas Valley.

The weather service said temperatures that are well above normal will sizzle areas in southern Nevada, southeast California and southwest Arizona that are below 4,000 feet in elevation.

The thermometer readings are expected to reach 108 in Las Vegas, 111 to 115 degrees down the Colorado River Valley and in northeast Clark County, 106 at Pahrump, 104 at Kingman, 107 to 111 in the San Bernardino County deserts and 120 degrees at Death Valley National Park.

The weather service said excessive heat warnings are issued when temperatures are forecast to reach dangerous levels that will stress the body if precautions are not taken.

Forecasters recommend limiting outdoor activities, drinking lots of water or other non-alcoholic beverages, wearing light-weight, light-colored clothing and spending more time in air-conditioned or well-ventilated places.

Winds will be calm today, becoming southwesterly between 10 and 13 mph.

After dropping off to 82 degrees overnight, temperatures will peak out at 108 degrees Sunday afternoon, forecasters said.

Monday won't be quite as hot, with temperatures climbing to 104 degrees. Temperatures are expected to remain a few degrees above normal through the middle of the week.

The normal high for today's date is 99 degrees. The record was 110 degrees, set in 1948.

Friday's high in Las Vegas was 109 degrees, which was just below the record high of 110 degrees for that date, set in 1944.
