weather:
110-degree heat to hit Las Vegas area
Excessive heat warning issued for areas below 4,000 feet in area
Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009 | 5:58 a.m.
Keep an eye on your elderly relatives, children and pets who are out in the heat today.
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today for the Las Vegas Valley.
The weather service said temperatures that are well above normal will sizzle areas in southern Nevada, southeast California and southwest Arizona that are below 4,000 feet in elevation.
The thermometer readings are expected to reach 108 in Las Vegas, 111 to 115 degrees down the Colorado River Valley and in northeast Clark County, 106 at Pahrump, 104 at Kingman, 107 to 111 in the San Bernardino County deserts and 120 degrees at Death Valley National Park.
The weather service said excessive heat warnings are issued when temperatures are forecast to reach dangerous levels that will stress the body if precautions are not taken.
Forecasters recommend limiting outdoor activities, drinking lots of water or other non-alcoholic beverages, wearing light-weight, light-colored clothing and spending more time in air-conditioned or well-ventilated places.
Winds will be calm today, becoming southwesterly between 10 and 13 mph.
After dropping off to 82 degrees overnight, temperatures will peak out at 108 degrees Sunday afternoon, forecasters said.
Monday won't be quite as hot, with temperatures climbing to 104 degrees. Temperatures are expected to remain a few degrees above normal through the middle of the week.
The normal high for today's date is 99 degrees. The record was 110 degrees, set in 1948.
Friday's high in Las Vegas was 109 degrees, which was just below the record high of 110 degrees for that date, set in 1944.

Also No comment.
This is the only comment allowed by the Communist dictator weatheman Dave Toplikar.
If you make any other comment he starts crying and screaming "I want my mommy"
and removes all the comments and disables the commenting section.
Dave doesn't remove or disable the comments on our weather stories. I do. Blame me.
They were removed because of a part of our posting agreement that says comments should basically be on topic, not be superfluous, and should elevate the discussion.
Comments that just say "no comment" hardly add to the discussion.
Even when our weather stories basically just say that it is going to be hot in Las Vegas, those stories are still typically this web site's most-read, and that's because people find the weather (even when it's normal) to be interesting. There is a reason why the local television newscasts dedicate so much of their airtime to the weather -- people are interested in that information.
Also, one of the great attributes of an online news site is that reading every story is completely opt-in; you make the choice to read or view something on a news site by clicking on the link.
Our suggestion for folks who don't like our "it's-going-to-be-hot-in-Vegas-today" weather stories is to no longer read our weather stories when the headline implies it is going to be hot.
Otherwise, I think we've basically decided that if a group of folks want to post "no comment" on our weather stories, what does that hurt?
In fact, I've tried to beat you to the punch a couple of times in the last week.
rob: we're trying to stimulate interest in your paper, reporters, and stories. Frankly, I like Mr. Toplikar's writing style.
Rob, thanks for the explanation. Now can you tell us why Brian Greenspun does not allow comments to HIS columns? Even Sherm Frederick and Tom Mitchell at the RJ allow readers to respond to their opinions -- why not Mr. Greenspun? He expects all of his employees' columns to be subjected to comments so why aren't his?
:)
touche
Great Idea to keep an eye on pets and the eldery in the extreme heat. Thank you for the information.
Our Linn -- Yes, I can explain that. That, also, is my fault.
Brian Greenspun gives me grief all of the time for not allowing comments on his columns. I disabled them because the comments on his columns rarely were about his columns.
When we did allow comments on his columns, they often focused on things completely personal and completely unrelated to topic he had written about. They were mostly just name-calling.
And when you delete a comment like that, it looks like we're just being jerks. Especially since it wasn't Brian Greenspun who would delete those comments -- it was usually me. But folks always thought it was Brian.
If it were just well-worded dissenting opinions, the comments would be back on his columns in a second. We're all for people having discussions.
As it says to the right of the box where you can submit comments:
"Our goal is not to limit the discussion, but rather to elevate it. "
And to us, "elevated" doesn't mean you have to agree with our columnists, even the columnists who own this newspaper.
:)
To us, "elevated" means you're responding intelligently and asking pertinent/thoughtful questions that further the discussion.
I've got a deal for the regular posters/visitors to this site: If any of you would like to get together and talk about how we can make this site better, more relevant, easier-to-use, etc..., I will buy the hamburgers and Cokes.
rob
Please people avoid Death Valley at all causes it's to hot out there we don't want any mishaps...
Rob I fully appreciate what your saying because it seems everything turns to racism and the article has nothing to do with.So hey to weatherman your doing a great job,and please filter some of this for us who just want to make a comment on a story.
"To us, "elevated" means you're responding intelligently and asking pertinent/thoughtful questions that further the discussion."
The key words in this statement are "To Us".
You're placing a higher value on what you think than the people who are commenting.
That's called censorship buddy. You're opinion is better than ours and that's all that matters.
It's unamerican even though this is a private website.
Nothing irritates me more than some clown deciding what I spent a few minutes of my life typing isn't good enough for him and deleting it.
Alot of times when that happens I don't comeback to the website.
Unless something is clearly offensive or racist I don't agree with deleting any comment, I don't care what it says.
108 Sunday?
thats nothing. I was at a casino late last summer in Baltrain, Russia and it
was 131 out side. Some cooker.

Peter can come for hamburgers, too. I'll wear my clown suit.

i have a comment! dag nab-it it's hot outside, i think i'll go over to the hard rock pool for a liquid refreshment and sneak a peak at some string bikini's,rob, have a great day, that's all i have to comment on.
Wow.
I leave this story for a couple of hours and look what happens.
Petergun, no I'm not a communist nor a dictator.
But when my daughter was 15, she probably agreed with you, at least the dictator part.
But I thought I'd better clear that up just in case the CIA or the phone cops are reading this.
Again: Not a communist; not a dictator.
Just a weather nerd, comrade.
PG: Start your own blog. It's a free country. Better yet, just buy the Sun or the RJ. Whew! It's gonna be hot!
rob: now you see how much fun the weather forum can be and no one is screaming at each other. I have to go out to a party. When I return, I hope to see 30 posts here today. There are a lot of us who are weather junkies. I spoke to my brother this morning and he said last night was a two blanket night in suburban metropolitan New York.
This may be the most sane discussion in the history of the Sun - inane - not insane!
Wait....I have a comment.
I heard it was so hot, that Mary Jo Buttifuco told Amy Fisher to shoot her with a squirt gun.
Since it is so hot, maybe the homeless can sleep under the shade of trees in park. Oh wait, due to xeroscaping, there are no trees for them to use as shade. So they end up at the public library and use them as cooling centers.
Breaking news! (I feel like I have to say "no comment" here...)
I'm in for the hamburger and coke lol. Especially in this heat :P
How about taking a dip in the Bellagio fountain or Lake Las Vegas to cool off? ( This should spur some off topic conversation) :)
