20-year National Guard solar plan advances

CARSON CITY – A solar project to supply power to three National Guard centers, two of them in Clark County, and save an estimated $3 million in energy costs over the next 20 years has taken another step forward.

The state Public Works Board has voted to delegate its authority over state construction to the Nevada Office of the Military to oversee the $15 million project.

Jim Groth, chairman of the Solar Task Force of the Nevada Military, said this is a power purchase agreement where the developer puts up all the money and the military agrees to buy the power at a fixed price for the next 20 years.

The military has signed a contract with Sierra Solar 1, which is the prime contractor for the project. Construction could start by Nov. 1 and be completed by April 1.

The solar energy is to be delivered to two National Guard readiness centers in Clark County – one in North Las Vegas at 6400 Range Road and the other in Las Vegas at 4500 W. Silverado Ranch Boulevard.

The third location is at the Joint Forces Headquarters in Carson City.

Gus Nunez, general manager of the public works board, said the military must ensure all the rules and building codes are complied with. And he said his staff would help with the design, if requested.

The state Board of Examiners, which meets Sept. 8, must still approve the contract.
