Letter to the editor:

Public insurance option is way to go

President Barack Obama and the Democrats in the Senate had better stick together and pass a health care reform bill with a public option, or they are unlikely to keep their majority. Republicans and the insurance lobby will stick together.

Bipartisan health care reform? No chance; Republicans will not vote for anything that helps Obama, because they are determined to defeat him three years from now.

The Democrats should publish the amount of money that each member of the Senate, Democrats and Republicans, receives from the insurance lobby.

We will never get affordable health care if we allow private health insurers to take a big profit out of every dollar spent on health care.

Private insurers are afraid of a public option because they know that without a profit motive, a public insurance plan can provide the same insurance coverage for much less money.

A public insurance agency won’t cost taxpayers anything; it will pay for itself. It might even show a profit.
