Excessive heat to sear Las Vegas

Heat warning issued for Friday, heat watch for Saturday

Expecting well above-normal temperatures, the National Weather Service has issued an en excessive heat warning for Friday for the Las Vegas Valley.

The heat warning is in effect from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday for elevations below 4,000 feet in the Mojave Desert, where temperatures could reach 110 degrees or more.

The weather service's forecast calls for 109 degrees in Las Vegas, 112 to 117 in the Colorado River Valley and northeast Clark County, 107 at Pahrump, 105 at Kingman, 108 to 112 in the San Bernardino County deserts and 121 at Death Valley National Park.

The weather service has also issued an excessive heat watch for Saturday, running from Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening, for elevations below 4,000 feet across the Mojave Desert.

The excessive heat criteria is based on the temperature reaching at least 108 degrees at McCarran International Airport, the weather service said.

An excessive heat warning is issued when temperatures are forecast to reach dangerous levels that will stress the body unless precautions are taken.

The weather service recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of the sun and checking on relatives and neighbors.

Today's forecast for the valley calls for sunny and hot conditions, with the high temperature reaching 107 degrees this afternoon, with west to northwest winds around 6 mph, becoming calm.

The normal high temperature for today's date is 100 degrees. The record is 109 degrees, set in 2001 and in 1944.
