Near-record heat heading for Las Vegas

Temperatures could climb to 109 degrees by Saturday

Las Vegas will have slightly warmer-than-normal temperatures today. But near-record heat could be on the way by the end of the week, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service said high pressure over the area will result in dry conditions and possibly excessive heat Friday and Saturday for the Las Vegas Valley.

Afternoon temperatures will warm through the week to 106 degrees Thursday, 108 Friday and 109 Saturday, the weather service said.

The forecast calls for today's high to reach 103 degrees in Las Vegas, starting with calm conditions, then a wind from the east around 6 mph.

The normal high for today's date is 100 degrees and the record high was 109, set in 2001.

High afternoon temperatures for area cities today include: 76 degrees in Mount Charleston, 106 at Lake Mead, 108 at Laughlin, 100 at Pahrump, 106 at Mesquite, 97 at Indian Springs, 95 at Searchlight, 100 at Primm and 101 in Boulder City.

Tonight's skies for the Las Vegas Valley will be clear with the temperature dropping to around 78 degrees.
