Concert, fashion show to aid museum

Periwinkle Cottage will host a fundraiser for the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum featuring purse designer Mary Frances and pianist Dan Troxell Aug. 29 at the Boulder Dam Museum, 1305 Arizona St.

The event will begin at 11 a.m. with a fashion show and luncheon. The $30 admission price includes a CD by Troxell.

A 1 p.m., Frances and Troxell with meet with the public..

At 3 p.m., Troxell, of Oceanside, Calif., will perform a concert. Admission price is $20 and includes a CD.

The event is being billed as a Fundraising Extravaganza.

Church to host community party

Calvary Chapel will host a Community Block Party 3 to 9 p.m. Sept. 5 at Bicentennial Park, 999 Colorado St.

Events will include games, waterslides, a bean bag toss, face painting, story telling, arts and crafts and more.

Annie Meadows and the Nellis Air Force Base Gospel Choir are scheduled to perform. A movie will be shown at 7 p.m.

The Boulder City Hospital Foundation is seeking volunteers to help with the annual Art in the Park fundraiser from now until the event Oct. 3 and 4.

Christian school begins 10th year

Grace Christian Academy began its 10th year with the start of school Aug. 17 at its campus at Grace Community Church, 1150 Wyoming St.

The private school serves Boulder City and Henderson families with classes for kindergarten through sixth grade.

The staff this year includes Mary Jo Zapolski, kindergarten; Pam Albin, first and second grade; Mary Deen, third and fourth grade; Kristie Mraz, fixth and sixth grades and science exploration; Linda Estes, computer and administrative assistant; Danielle Melendez, physical education; Claire Childress, art; Jennifer Spinkelink, bookkeeper; and Marcia Harhay, administrator.

Boulder City student selected for honor

Ashley Harrington, a student at the University of San Diego, was selected for Mortar Board, a national honor society recognizing students for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service.

Harrington of Boulder City, who is a senior this fall, is majoring in political science with a minor in theology and Spanish. Her long-range goal is to join the Peace Corps, and to work in health safety and access.

Mortar Board, founded in 1918, has more than 200 chapters across the country. Students are selected in their junior year and continue to serve the university and community through special projects as seniors.

The University of San Diego is a Catholic institution of higher learning chartered in 1949. The school enrolls some 7,500 undergraduate and graduate students.
