Boulder City residents will have a dry September, as the municipal pool closed today for repairs.

The pool usually closes for two weeks after Labor Day for maintenance and installation of the bubble that allows winter swimming. But this year, the pool is in for some overdue work.

At the main pool, the plaster will be chipped out and all new plaster installed. The surge trenches, which capture any water splashed over the side, will be repaired and resealed. And the coping stones, which provide the rim around the pool, will be replaced, Boulder City Aquatics Coordinator Sheri O’Berto said.

The coping stones have corroded over the years to the point where some residents say they get small cuts or scratches when they come to the side of the pool.

The dive tank and baby pool, which remained closed over the summer, already have been replastered and the surge trenches repaired and resealed, O’Berto said. The coping stones at both smaller pools will also be replaced, she said.

The pools originally were going to be closed in June for the repair work, but when the coping stones did not arrive in time, the repairs were delayed until the end of the summer, O’Berto said.

As of Aug. 18, the coping stones still had not arrived, she said. That wasn’t a problem yet, she said, because it would take four weeks to do the other work before the coping stones can be installed.

The pools will remain closed until the work is done — at least through September, O’Berto said.

“I think everybody wishes we could stay open,” she said.

While the pools are closed, however, the neighboring racquetball facility and the aquatics offices will remain open, she said. Hours will be 1 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday during construction.
