Letter to the editor:

Put down the guns and join the debate

Why are guys with handguns strapped to their thighs, some toting military-style assault weapons, showing up at protests of President Barack Obama’s town-hall meetings to discuss health care reform? Guns and health care have nothing in common, unless someone shoots you.

It is an in-your-face tactic to intimidate people who don’t think just like they do. Nobody wants to take away their guns in this country — that cat is out of the bag.

In a republic such as the United States, people discuss and even argue their differences; you know, civilized. Red-faced, rabid-looking people with guns strapped on thighs look ridiculous and downright dangerous to me.

Four presidents — Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley and John F. Kennedy — were shot and killed in office, and there were assassination attempts against Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.

At presidential events, leave your guns at home, unless you want some kid or nut case grabbing it and shooting you or someone else.
