Excessive heat warning issued for Las Vegas for Friday

Temperature expected to hit high of 110 degrees

Temperatures are expected to soar to 110 degrees Friday afternoon in the Las Vegas Valley, prompting the National Weather Service to issue an excessive heat warning for the the southern Great Basin and Mojave Desert.

The heat warning, which lasts from noon until 7 p.m. Friday, says high temperatures will range from 110 degrees in the Las Vegas Valley to nearly 114 degrees in the Colorado River Valley and to nearly 121 degress in Death Valley, the weather service said.

Temperatures will be near or exceed record highs in several low elevation areas as well, the weather service said.

Heat warnnings are issued when temperatures are forecast to reach dangerous levels that will stress the body if precautions are not taken.

Today's high temperature is expected to hit 108 degrees, or just shy of the 110-degree record for this date set in 1950. The normal high for today is 101 degress.

However, cooler weather and the chance for some rain moves in this weekend, forecasters said.

The weather service says there's a 30 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m Saturday. Temperatures Saturday will be closer to normal, with the high reaching 99 degrees.

More chances for thunderstorms are expected for Sunday and Monday.
