Shadow Ridge High is hoping this season turns out better than last year’s.

The Mustangs return a majority of their starting lineup and have high hopes they will be more competitive in a deep Northwest Division, the top league in the large-school classification.

Last season, the Mustangs (2-8, 1-6) struggled to stay competitive as opponents outscored them 335-131. As a result, Shadow Ridge replaced its defensive coordinator.

“We should be a lot more competitive than we were last year,” Shadow Ridge coach Gabe Gledhill said. “Last year we weren’t in too many games, but this year we will be a lot more competitive and hopefully that will translate into some wins.”

If the Mustangs hope to show any sign of improvement, it will have to start with senior running back Zach Hill.

Hill led the Mustangs with 1,203 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 180 carries last season, which accounted for nearly half of the team’s total offense.

“Zach Hill will be the main focus of our offensive team,” Gledhill said.
