Eldorado signal caller continues to mature

Eldorado football player Ja Quorrey Williams Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009.

JaQuorrey Williams rarely says a word.

Williams, Eldorado High's junior quarterback, is one of the quietest athletes coach Leon Evans has ever spent time around. But when Williams gets on the field, his play speaks loudly.

“He is really athletic. He can throw a really nice ball,” Evans said. “He’s the kind of kid you want leading your football team.”

Williams has started for the Sundevils since his freshman year, gradually improving each year. Despite some inconsistent moments, Williams led the Sundevils to a 4-4 record last year in Evans’ first season last year.

They had a shot at the playoffs before dropping their last three games. With Williams expected to command even more attention this season, Evans thinks the playoffs are a realistic goal.

“We’ll be young,” Evans said. “But we’ll be competitive in the Northeast division this year.”

Complementing Williams at quarterback will be senior linebacker Mike Williams. He will be the leader defensively, but will play offense as well.

“(Mike Williams) has great wheels,” Evans said. “We’re looking forward to seeing him play this season.”

Aside from those two, Eldorado will rely on a number of underclassmen. The schedule is also difficult in the always-balanced Northeast Division.

But Evans is confident he can turn the football program at Eldorado around.

And, he knows he has the quarterback to get it done.
