Ticket available for annual Chautauqua

Tickets are now on sale for the 2009 Boulder City Chautauqua Sept. 19 at the Boulder Theatre, 1225 Arizona St.

Performances this year will include David Fenimore portraying Western writer Zane Grey, Tyler Stewart as sharp shooter Annie Oakley and Anita Watson as Virginia City pioneer Mary McNair Mathews. In addition, entertainment will be provided by singer/guitarist Steve Cottrell and Clare Tobler's Every Wednesday bluegrass group.

The event is a fundraiser for the Boulder City Hoover Dam Museum.

Tickets are $15 for each of the two performances. Fenimore will perform at the 1:30 p.m. show, and Stewart and Watson at 6:30 p.m.

Summer series ends with vocalist

St. Jude's Ranch for Children will hold the final concert in its Afternoon Summer Entertainment Series from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 22 at the ranch's gift shop, 100 St. Jude's St.

Coren Zai, a blues singer, will entertain.

School supplies sought to help needy children

The Teens Actively Contributing group is holding a collection drive to gather school supplies for Boulder City children who need them.

Supplies being collected include pens, pencils, erasers, colored pencils, crayons, markers, lined paper, scissors, glue, folders and backpacks.

The group has set up bins at the following locations:

  • Boulder Dam Credit Union, 530 Avenue G.
  • Boulder City Recreation Center, 900 Arizona St.
  • Senior Center of Boulder City, 813 Arizona St.
  • Boulder City Chamber of Commerce, 465 Nevada Way.
  • Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.
  • Boulder City Boys & Girls Club, 801 Adams Blvd.
  • Community Fitness Center, 801 Adams Blvd.

Museum to host talk on Lost City

The Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum will host its monthly Third Thursday at the Museum Aug. 20 featuring Kathryne Olson, director of the Lost City Museum in Overton. The talk will begin at 6 p.m. at the Boulder City museum inside the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.

Olson will share her knowledge and insight into the first people to live in Southern Nevada. Beginning with the Paleo-Indians 13,000 years ago down to the present, a variety of Native American groups have endured life in the sometimes hostile environments of Southern Nevada.

Democratic Club screening Michael Moore movie about health care

The Boulder City Democratic Club will sponsor a screening of "Sicko," Michael Moore's movie about the U.S. health-care system at 1 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

The movie will be followed by a discussion of health-care reform.

The Democratic Club recommends the Web site https://sites.google.com/site/healthcarereformdebate/home for a further discussion on health-care reform.

Police taking registration for Citizens Academy

The Boulder City Police Department is accepting registration for its Citizens Academy, which will run on Thursday evenings Sept. 10 through Nov. 12.

The academy will provide citizens insight into how the police department works and what officers do.

Topics will include criminal and traffic law, drugs, DUI, firearms, crime scene investigation, domestic violence and forensic technique.

The academy is free. Students must be 18 years or older, but there are no physical requirements.

Applications, which will be accepted through Sept. 1, are available at www.bcnv.org or in the lobby of the police department.
