LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Health care reform too big to get wrong

Regarding Gail Collins’ column published in Tuesday’s Las Vegas Sun, “Let the crazies have their say”:

Why should Washington be surprised by the health care panic it has created? Even on simpler programs, those in Washington have not been able to predict the long-term effects of their creations.

Prime examples of this are unsustainable Medicare and Social Security systems and the biggest real estate bubble the country has ever seen. And they want us to trust them on a 1,000-page conglomeration of ideas from their lobbyists, legislation that most of them haven’t even read?

If Washington wants to work this in a rational manner, it needs to slow down, provide a summary of everything the program will do, and tell us how much it will cost and who will pay for it. Panic is not surprising when something this big is being jammed down our throats before anyone understands what he is going to have to swallow.

This is too important not to be done right.
