I know annoying. I understand annoying. I can relate to annoying. Gary Peck is annoying. And he is very good at it, and has been for more than a decade on behalf of causes that have annoyed (and worse) many entrenched institutions. Peck, as executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, has agitated for important rights and refused to ever shut up or be cowed. Whether it was free speech or victims’ rights, Peck was on the front lines, challenging orthodoxies and never giving any quarter. When he announced Thursday that he would be leaving his job, I felt a sense of sadness that his voice would be quieted. But, I’d guess, not for long. He will annoy again soon. I hope.
