Helicopter makes emergency landing in Lake Mead area

Callville Bay

A tour helicopter heading back to Las Vegas from the Grand Canyon made an emergency landing Thursday evening in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area after the pilot learned the aircraft was suffering from an electrical problem, the National Park Service said.

No injuries were reported, said Park Service spokesman Andrew Munoz.

The helicopter, operated by Sundance Helicopters of Las Vegas, was returning to McCarran International Airport with six passengers on board when alarms and warnings alerted the pilot to an electrical problem. The pilot decided to land as soon as possible as a safety precaution and landed the helicopter at about 6:20 p.m. at Callville Bay, Munoz said.

This is the second tour helicopter this week to make an emergency landing in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

On Monday, a cormorant struck the windshield of a Maverick Helicopters aircraft and the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing on a bike trail near the water treatment plant off Lakeshore Drive. The pilot of that aircraft suffered minor injuries.
