The Rebel Yell, the UNLV student newspaper, has a blunt message for new President Neil Smatresk: Get to know the students or else. Granted, the editorial in Monday’s edition wasn’t that blunt — but almost: “Smatresk needs to act early to prevent what happened with (David) Ashley — the former president’s qualification for the office came into question and the campus community’s response was a resounding, ‘Well, we’re not sure.’ We simply didn’t know him very well.” And this: “Show UNLV ... you are committed to our goals and that you have some of your own. Reach out to the people you serve and take immediate steps toward forging strong bonds with student and faculty leaders.” Smatresk ignores this counsel at his own risk.
